DALLAS, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team staved off elimination with an 18-9 victory over Keystone College in NCAA Tournament action Saturday morning at Misericordia University's Tamber Field.

The 18 runs are the most scored by W&J in an NCAA Tournament game. W&J improves to 32-13 overall and will face either Salve Regina or Misericordia in another NCAA Regional elimination game Saturday afternoon. The Giants season ends at 30-14 overall.

Keystone, playing as the road team, jumped out to an early lead with three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. A bases clearing double down the right field line by Griffin Yast highlighted the inning for the Giants.

W&J battled right back in the bottom half of the inning. The Presidents took advantage of two errors, three hit batters and two wild pitches in the frame. W&J had just one hit in the inning, which was a leadoff single by Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford).

The Giants tacked on three more runs in the second inning. A botched potential double play ball ended the inning and allowed Keystone to take advantage of to build a 6-2 lead. A solo shot by Julio Acosto in the top of the third stretched the Giants lead to five.

The Red and Black scored a pair of runs on two hits in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 7-4. Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) walked and moved to third on a single by Scout Zaas (Powell, Ohio / Wellington School). A wild pitch brought in a Presidents' run for a third time when Sante scored. W&J added a second run in the frame when Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) was hit with the bases loaded.

The Presidents took their first lead of the day with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. All the damage came with two outs. A pair of walks set up the Presidents for the big inning. A one-out RBI single by Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) made it 7-5. Two batters later, Sam Schuster (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Fairport Harding) delivered a two-run single to right to tie the score. A fourth wild pitch brought in Josh Dezenzo (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) to help W&J take an 8-7 lead.

The lead was short-lived as a few miscues by the Presidents allowed the Giants to score two runs on no hits in the inning to regain the lead at 9-8. Horvat helped W&J answer in the bottom of the frame after he led with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A sac fly by Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) scored Horvat to retie the score at 9-9. Later in the inning, Zaas gave the Presidents the lead for good with an RBI single.

A six-run sixth inning helped W&J swell the lead to 16-9. A three-run home run by Trevor Dean (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) highlighted the outburst. The home run was the fourth of the season for Dean.

Lutz tacked on two more runs with a two-run home run in the seventh. The homer was the team-leading sixth of the season for Lutz.

Dean finished with a team-high four RBI. Horvat, Zaas and LaDuca each had three hits in the victory.

Horvat and Sante scored four runs apiece. Horvat swiped three bases in the win to set the school record for stolen bases. Horvat surpasses Joe Bogdewiecz's previous record of 61 stolen bases.

W&J took advantage of 12 walks and five hit batters by Keystone in the game.

Shane Fox (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) was credited with the win. Fox tossed 3.1 scoreless innings and struck out four Giants. Fox has a 3-1 record this season.
