The Mary Washington baseball team (2-0) rolled through Mt. St. Mary's College (N.Y.) with a pair of victories over the Knights on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles took home the victory in the first game with a mercy-rule, seven-inning win, 18-7. Then they played a much more contested game in the back-half of Saturday's doubleheader, 5-2.
Eight Eagles recorded a multi-hit game in Game 1 as Ryan Schwarz (three hits), Burke Steifman (four), Bobby Ayscue (two), Ty Loe (three), Cooper Fulton (two), Tommy Martinez (three), Phillip Woodard (two) and Oliver Martin (two) all recorded multiple hits. Schwarz doubled twice, Lowe added a double and a triple, while Ayscue and Martinez recorded a two-bagger each.
Gavin Riley worked through five innings to record the victory for the Eagles, yielding just four hits in and a run. Ketz Murray and Jackson Beale both finished out the final two innings for the Eagles.
In Game 2, the Eagles offense got quiet, but strong pitching backed the timely offense. Schwarz, Steifman, Ayscue and Martinez all recorded a pair of hits for Mary Washington. Martinez, too, came through with two outs in the fifth inning to deal the damaging blow -- a two-out, three RBI triple that put UMW out in front, 4-0.
Justin Ritz (four innings), Gabe Delgado (3.1 innings), Griffin Graham (0.1 innings) and Lowe (1.1 innings) finished the game out for the Eagles as Delgado recorded his first victory of the season and Lowe recorded his first save.
The Eagles are back in action on Sunday morning at 10 a.m., wrapping up the weekend series with the Knights.
