W&L Falls to Southern Virginia in Midweek Tilt, 7-5

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team dropped their first midweek game of the season as they fell 7-5 to Southern Virginia University on Tuesday night at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Seth Lloyd got the Knights (1-2) offense rolling as he singled up the middle. Ty Martinez ripped a single to center field and after a throwing error by Jonathan French, both runners moved into scoring position. Nick Daynes put SVU in front early as he drove Lloyd home with a single.
  • Two batters later, Stockton Hall capped off the first frame with a three-run blast to left field to put the Knights up 4-0.
  • Paul Ramseur led off the bottom of the first with a walk before Jacob Jackson got aboard with a single to left field. After a Campbell Charneco flew out, Drew Larsenloaded the bases as he drew the second walk of the inning. The Generals (2-2) cut the deficit to three as Nick Lagges drove in Ramseur on a fielder's choice.
  • French kicked off the second inning as he beat out an infield hit for a lead off single. French stole third following an Ethan Zulueta sacrifice bunt before scoring on a throwing error by Lloyd on a Frankie Maloof ground ball, cutting the deficit to two.
  • Maloof scored all the way from first base a few batters later as Jackson blasted an RBI double to center field, bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of SVU.
  • The Knights extended their lead to two in the top of the third as an error put Nick Daynes on before Mitch Smith roped an RBI double over French's head in center field.
  • Hall drove in his fourth batter of the day as he found a gap in the right side of the infield, bringing home Smith from second base and putting SVU up 6-3.
  • The Generals looked to strike for the third straight inning as French laid down a beautiful bunt down the third base line, advancing Nick Lagges to third. French took off for second on the ensuing pitch but Nick Lagges was gunned down at home by Lloyd, ending the inning and the scoring threat.
  • Bob Burr relieved Raliegh Craft in the top of the fourth and shut down the Southern Virginia offense, striking out two batters and forcing a ground out to end the inning.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Drew Larsen roped a double down the left field line to put the Generals within striking distance. Lagged drove him home with a single to the left side of the infield. The Blue and White would cut the score to 6-5 as French beat out an infield single while a throwing error brought Lagges home from second base.
  • Martinez led off the ninth inning with a lead off walk before reaching third on a passed ball. Marcelino Leonardo Jr. drove him in as he beat out a ground ball to first base, giving the visitors a 7-5 lead.
  • The Generals offense produced two hits in the bottom of the ninth but Harrison Moore earned his first save of the season as he forced a ground out to end the game.
