Duffus Walks Off Muhlenberg in Non-Conference Twinbill

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball team picked up a pair of wins against Muhlenberg Sunday afternoon at Weequahic Park. The Scarlet Raiders used a walk-off hit by Reid Duffus to win 5-4 before coming back in game two to win 6-3. 

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 5, Muhlenberg 4

Rutgers-Newark (1-1) scattered eight hits in the win with Eric Recchia pacing the team with two hits. Reid Duffus and Jon Rosado led the team led the team with 2 RBIs. On the hill, Connor Baksh (1-0) hurled six innings in relief and allowed just two hits with four strikeouts. Muhlenberg (0-1) was led by Marc Quarrie's two hits. Ethan Brochin (0-1) picked up the loss after throwing 4.1 innings with three strikeouts.

The Scarlet Raiders were first on the board in the bottom of the second after Rob Gonzalez hit a lead-off single. Jesse Evensen eventually brought him home with an RBI single up the middle.

Muhlenberg scattered four runs over the next two innings to jump ahead 4-1. In the sixth, the Scarlet Raiders tallied three runs to even the playing field at four. Rosado picked up his pair of RBIs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring both runs on a fielder's choice. 

With play knotted at four, the game extended beyond the seven-inning mark into the 10th where Duffus brought home the game-winning run with a fielder's choice.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 6, Muhlenberg 3

Rutgers-Newark (2-1) used eight hits to score six runs in the second game. Duffus, Michael Weinbel, and Devin Rojas all tallied two hits. Mickey Swenson (1-0) earned the win while George Xanthos picked up his first save. Muhlenberg (0-2) tallied five hits in game two with Jack Kent pacing the team with two. On the mound, Luke Foley (0-1) picked up the loss in five innings with five strikeouts. 

Muhlenberg took the lead in the top of the 5th after four scoreless innings behind a wild pitch and an error in center field. The Scarlet Raiders responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame when Duffus hit an RBI single up the middle to score Dario Morales

Rutgers-Newark took the lead in the 7th when they took advantage of errors by the Mules. Weinbel would bring home the second run of the inning, after Rojas scored via an error, with an infield single. Paul Recchia capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to score his brother, Eric Recchia.

A pair of singles by Rojas and Matthew Storch added insurance runs for the Scarlet Raiders as they held onto the lead to pick up their second win of the season.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Friday, March 1 when they head to Hoboken, NJ to take on Stevens at 3:00 pm.
