Redlands Baseball uses seven-run seventh to upset No. 21 La Verne on the road

LA VERNE, Calif. – The University of Redlands baseball team (7-3, 2-2) upset No. 21 University of La Verne 8-3 on Friday afternoon thanks to a seven-run seventh inning.

The Bulldogs had a slow offensive start as they scored once through 6.2 innings as starter Tyler Reiter and reliever Jakob Russell kept them in the game thanks to a combined six, three-run innings to that point.

The lone run came in the third inning when Nathan Miller brought home Luke De Vries on a sacrifice fly to right after De Vries led off the inning with a walk.

Then in the seventh with runners on second and third with two outs Cade McClelland drew a walk to load the bases. Ceasar Correa then pinch hit and picked up an RBI on a bases loaded walk.

The lead-taking and game-winning hit came from Ian Umscheid, who also was a pinch hitter, when he singled up the middle and brought home Tyler Preece and McClelland for a 4-3 lead.

Will Cell then came up and hit an RBI-single to center. Mason Chetcuti received a free pass from the new Leopard pitcher before De Vries picked up a trio of RBI as the lead was five, 8-3, only six batters after La Verne was one out away from getting out of the inning.

Russell proceeded to get the Leopard in order in the seventh and eighth and worked around a two-out walk and steal to get his first win of the season.

This was Russell's fifth appearance of the season and the third time he's gotten more than three outs as he finished with 3.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

De Vries reached base four times with two runs scored and three RBI. Preece walked three times and scored a run and Cell finished 2-for-5.

As a team the Bulldogs were outhit 8-6 but they were able to reach first via the walk 12 times while their pitching staff only conceded four free passes.

Redlands and La Verne's doubleheader was moved from Saturday to Sunday, March 3 due to the potential for rain. The games will still start with first pitch of game one at 11:00 a.m.
