Oneonta Sweeps Weekend Series Against Canton

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team completed the weekend sweep with 15-2 and 6-4 wins over SUNY Canton on Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons have won three straight and move to 3-4, while the Roos fall to 0-6. 

In the first game, Canton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Michael Henry scored on an Oneonta wild pitch. The Red Dragons escaped the inning, holding the Roos to one run. After Oneonta's lead-off batter struck out before sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) doubled to center field. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored when junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) grounded out to third. 

Junior pitcher Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) struck out a Canton in the second to complete a 1-2-3 inning, but the Red Dragons failed to manage a hit in the bottom of the frame. Roper struck out another batter in the third as the score stayed 1-1. 

Oneonta exploded for seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the third. Jacoby and junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) reached second and third and were brought home with a Foglia two-RBI double. Sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) knocked his first-career home run to left field to push the lead to 5-1, and senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) followed with a double. Junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) struck a deep home run to left field to make it 7-1. Oneonta added one more run from senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) after scoring on a catcher error. 

The Roos went three-up, three-down in the top of the fourth, with Roper striking out another batter. Oneonta continued to roll into the bottom of the frame, with freshman Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) scoring on a Dwyer single. Sophomore Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) singled in two RBI to make it 11-1. Junior Ethan Duda (Latham, NY/The Albany Academies) singled home Kaseta to finish the inning 13-1. 

Senior Tom Roefaro (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) pitched in the fifth inning, striking out three Canton batters. Jachens led off with a double, and Oneonta loaded the bases. Sandoval hit a sacrifice fly to push the score to 14-1, and junior Andrew Bonilla (Walden, NY/Valley Central) added one more run on a passed ball. 

Canton recorded one more run in the seventh inning but could not cut into the Red Dragons' lead. 

Dwyer batted 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs. Jacoby added two hits and two runs. Foglia finished with two runs and three RBI. Sandoval recorded three RBI.

Roper (1-0) went 4.0 innings with no hits and four strikeouts. Roefaro went 1.0 innings and struck out three batters. 

Henry and Detlefsen tallied runs for Canton, while Pabon had a hit and an RBI.

Rose (0-2) went 2.0 innings with two strikeouts and seven hits. 

Game two was a little closer, with the Roos taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Danny Maldonado doubled in a pair of runners. Oneonta followed with senior Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) hitting a single to allow Jacoby to reach home. Dwyer hit a single to left field to give Turner a run and tie 2-2. 

Canton tacked on a run at the top of the fourth quarter, with Rosado reaching home on a Santana single. 

Oneonta tied at the bottom of the frame when Dwyer scored on a shortstop error. Senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) hit a single to allow Liquori to score to take a 4-3 lead. Oneonta added a pair of runs in the fifth, with Dwyer and Turner scoring on a Hutter single. 

Canton looked to make the comeback in the seventh. Vazquez singled in a runner with two outs to make it 6-4. Senior Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) struck out the final batter to earn the save and give Oneonta the win. 

Dwyer went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. 

Senior pitcher Kyle Rosenberger (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) went 4.0 innings to earn the win. He struck out one batter.

Oneonta next plays at home against Skidmore on Wed. Mar. 6 at 2 p.m.
