Maryville Falls at Oglethorpe Tourney

ATLANTA – Maryville dropped its first two games of the season Saturday at the Oglethorpe Invitational.

A back-and-forth opener went Roanoke's way by a 9-7 count before the Scots lost a one-run lead late and fell 6-4 to Transylvania. The Scots left 13 runners on base against Roanoke, with the Maroons leaving just two.

Christian Carlton was the hitting leader for Maryville, going 3-for-6 in the two games and walking twice. Jacob Johnston continued his strong start to 2024 by going 3-for-7, scoring twice and driving home two. Jimmy Meredith went 3-for-8 with three runs scored and one driven in, with Colin Dunworth in the first game and Zach Devries in the second posting 2-for-3 outings.

Roanoke outhit Maryville 10-8, and Transy finished with a 12-8 edge in base hits. Doubles by Zac Graham in the opener and Max Bowers in the nightcap accounted for the only Scot extra-base hits.

Bryce Leonhardt earned his first start of the season, going 3 and 2/3 innings against Roanoke and allowed six runs (three earned) on five hits. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Kyle Timko picked up the loss in relief.

In Game 2, Mitchell Grannen started for the second time this year and went five innings. Grannen allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while fanning five. Xavier Resto absorbed the loss in relief.

Maryville wraps up its Georgia stay with a 2:30 p.m. contest against host Oglethorpe. The Scots swept a three-game home series against the Stormy Petrels last year and took two out of three in Atlanta two seasons ago.

MC plays its home opening series Friday through next Sunday against Allegheny.
