Keblin Laces a Two-Run Double as Timely Hitting Pushes WPI Over Penn College

Myrtle Beach, SC --- WPI needed just four hits to rattle off its sixth-straight win, topping Penn College 8-3 on Thursday, as action continued at the Myrtle Beach Spring Break Tournament. The Engineers are now 6-0 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 4-4.

Liam Keblin (Newton, MA) led the Engineers with a double and two RBI, while Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, NY), DJ Brooks (Danvers, MA), and Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) also drove in runs. WPI's Dominic Monico (Litchfield, NH) got the win, starting the game and going three innings, allowing one earned run on three hits.

For Penn, Jaiden Augustine (Dillsburg, PA) and Brandon Shane (Boyertown, PA) each collected two hits, while Shane, Adam Aldenderfer (Trout Run, PA), and Anthony Barbella (Livingston, NJ) added RBI. Jonas McGrath (Ashland, PA) suffered the loss, going 2.2 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on two hits with three strikeouts.

Penn made it 1-0 in the top of the first inning, needing just one hit to get on the board. A throwing error and two ground-outs put Augustine on third with two outs and Aldenderfer singled through the right side to give the Wildcats the lead.

WPI responded in the bottom of the frame, sparked by a lead-off double from Hand. Cash then sent Hand home on a sacrifice fly to knot the game at 1-1.  The Engineers took the lead in the bottom of the second, with a lead-off single from Gavin George (Salem, NH) coming around to score on a bases-loaded walk from Hand.

Penn College responded with a run in the top of the third, tying the game. Augustine opened the frame with a single, and after a pair of ground-outs advanced him to third, Shane singled up the middle to make it 2-2.

WPI broke open the game with four runs in the bottom of the third inning, capitalizing on a hit and a pair of Penn errors. Zachary Roethlein (Pomfret Center, CT) worked a walk to open the frame, eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Keblin then got the big hit of the frame with a double to right field that scored two, later scoring on a throwing error himself to make it 6-2.

The Wildcats got one back in the top of the fifth, as a fielder's choice from Shawn Townsend (Hatboro, PA) scored on an RBI hit-by-pitch issued to Barbella.

WPI tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth, with a Brooks single scoring a pair to push it to 8-3. The Engineers' relievers then held Penn without a run the rest of the way, sealing the five-run victory.

WPI closes out its Spring Break trip tomorrow at 9am, taking on Westminster (PA). Penn College is off until March 14 when it plays at Juniata at 3:30pm.
