Big Innings Power York (Pa.) to Sweep of St. Mary's (Md.)

YORK, PA – The York College baseball squad opened their 2024 home schedule with a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday at a very cold and windy Jaquet Field.
The Spartans won game one 11-3 and completed the sweep with a 25-1 victory in five innings as game two was halted because of the harsh weather conditions. The teams played the two games in unyielding winds which peaked with 45 mph gusts with a sustained 25 mph winds as the temps continued to drop throughout the day.
York had three innings during the two games in which they scored nine runs or more including a 14-run second inning in game two.
The Spartans improve to 5-1 overall while the Seahawks fall to 2-6.

How It Happened
• The Seahawks kicked off the scoring in the second on an RBI double to left by Ian Walters as St. Mary's broke the ice. York promptly responded as Michael Tinneny ripped an absolute rocket home run to right center, tying the game with one mighty swing of the bat.
• St. Mary's recaptured the lead in the top of the third but it could have been worse for York. A George Berbakos single followed by a bunt hit and an error put Seahawks at the corners with no outs. After Brandon Purdy got a strikeout, the Hawks attempted a double steal but the runner at second was thrown out before the runner scored from third. That proved to be big as Purdy hit the next batter followed by a second Walters double to left. Purdy got a ground out to end the threat, allowing just the one run in the inning.
• The Green and White blew the game open in the fourth with nine runs on eight hits. Connor Pickle started the scoring with a two-run single up the middle. Matthew Wade scored the third run of the inning with an RBI single up the middle. Luke Moser plated another run with single through the left side to make it 5-2. Gabe Trevena launched a two-run double to the wall in left center, pushing the lead to 7-2. A wild pitch scored Lucas Prendergast with a run while Robby Elzinga plated another run with a line drive sacrifice fly to center. Tinneny capped the big inning with his second home run of the game with another blast to right center for the 10-2 lead.
• York scored their final run of game one as Elzinga drew a two-out bases loaded walk for his second RBI of the game. The Seahawks closed out the scoring with a run off the Spartan bullpen in the top of the seventh.

How It Happened
• The Seahawks again struck for the opening salvo as Cole Tarleton launched a solo home run to right field, giving St. Mary's a 1-0 lead. That lead would be very short-lived as the Green and White put up 14 runs in the bottom of the inning to seize control of the contest. The Spartans scored their 14 runs on 10 hits with two errors, three hit batters and three walks as they sent 19 batters to the plate in the inning. Brett DeWees started the scoring with an RBI ground out. Lucas Predergast then ripped a bases-loaded double to score a pair. Gabe Trevena followed with a two-run double of his own to make it 5-1. The Spartans reloaded the bases only to have Michael Tinneny stroke a single to right to score a pair for York. Connor Pickle singled to reload the bases and Chris Betler followed with an RBI single to make it 8-1. DeWees was hit by a pitch to score York's ninth run of the frame. Luke Moser singled to right to score a run and Predergast followed with a two-run single down the right field line to make it 12-1. Elzinga had an RBI fielder's choice to score Moser while Andrew Santarpia finished the inning with an RBI single to score Prendergast.
• The offensive onslaught continued in the third as York put up another 11 runs on eight hits with two more Seahawk errors, a hit batter and a walk. DeWees opened the scoring in the frame with his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to left. Tinneny, Betler, Moser, Aaron HershbergerJason Cassidy and Chris Nesensohn each had RBI base hits in the inning.
• The game would be called after the top of the fifth as the conditions continued to deteriorate as the afternoon progressed.
