Kell’s big day propels No. 5 Salisbury Baseball past No. 8 Johns Hopkins, 8-4

BALTIMORE, Md.Andrew Kell hit a go-ahead two-run double to spark a five-run ninth inning and propel the fifth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team past the eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, 8-4, on Sunday afternoon at Babb Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Andrew Kell started the day with a bang in the form of a leadoff home run to dead center. Two innings later he belted another solo shot to right, doubling the Sea Gull lead to 2-0.
  • SU manufactured another in the fourth. Danny Sheeler singled to lead off and moved up on a sac bunt. After a Dylan Winebrenner base hit that put men on the corners, Sheeler came home on an Ethan Ruiz fielder's choice to make it 3-0.
  • The Blue Jays got it all back in the sixth. Three straight one-out singles loaded the bases, then two batters later Lukas Greer ripped a bases-clearing double to left center to knot it up at 3-3.
  • JHU took its first lead of the game in the eighth. Jimmy Stevens singled with one out, and Caleb Cyr's double two batters later put both men in scoring position. Shawn Steuerer followed with a base hit to left to score Stevens and make it 4-3, but Adam Tommer threw a trailing Cyr out at the plate to keep SU within one run.
  • Salisbury wasted little time building on the momentum from Tommer's outfield assist. Winebrenner led off the top of the ninth with a single, and Ruiz followed with a double. After Alex Seidleck walked to load the bases, Kell brought a pair home with a double to right center to put the Sea Gulls back up 5-4.
  • Kyle Brex followed with his own two-run two-sacker to the same spot as Kell's, and Tim Petrucelli singled to left center to bring Brex home and boost the margin to 8-4, all before SU recorded an out in the ninth.
  • Shawn Rosemond allowed the Blue Jays a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth, but Dylan Whitney hit into a 4-6-3 double play and Rosemond got Isaiah Winikur to fly out to left to put it in the books.
