No. 4 Salisbury Baseball overruns Ursinus in doubleheader

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team put up a total of 35 runs to win its seventh and eighth games in a row, sweeping a doubleheader against the Ursinus Bears, 23-10 and 12-3, on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Field.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1

  • The Sea Gulls jumped on the scoreboard from the downbeat. Andrew Kell led off the first inning with a walk and Kyle Brex bunted his way on. After a double steal, Tim Petrucelli doubled both runners home, and two batters later Zach Geesaman cracked his own RBI double to make it 3-0 SU.
  • The Bears answered with a pair in the second on an RBI groundout and an error to get within 3-2.
  • SU punched back with two of its own in the third on an Adam Tommer two-run single, then in the fourth Danny Sheeler brought home two more with a home run to make it 7-2.
  • Kell singled home two more in the fifth and Dylan Winebrenner brought one home with his own base-knock to make it 10-2.
  • Salisbury put up an eight-spot in the top of the sixth on a Tommer two-run single, error, Petrucelli two-run knock, Winebrenner RBI double, and Sheeler two-run single to get it to 18-2.
  • Ursinus got a pair back in the home sixth on an Andrew Richter two-run double and Barritt Ross run-scoring single to move within 18-5.
  • The Sea Gulls plated three more in the seventh on an error and Brian Wilson fielder's choice, then in the eighth Roman March doubled home a pair more to make it 23-5.
  • The Bears rallied for five in the eighth but it was too little, too late to threaten SU in a 23-10 final affair.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Danny Sheeler homered for the second straight game, going 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBIs.
  • Dylan Winebrenner went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs scored.
  • Andrew Kell stole four bases for the game, finishing 2-for-2 with three walks, three runs, and two rib-eyes.
  • Tim Petrucelli and Adam Tommer each drove in four runs for the Sea Gulls.
  • Garrett Beaver (2-0) picked up the win with 4.2 innings of relief work, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits.
  • Benji Thalheimer pitched a scoreless first inning to start the game.

URSINUS GAME NOTES

  • Andrew Richter finished 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to pace the Bears.
  • Barritt Ross went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Jude Gilhool batted 4-for-5 with a run scored.
  • Kieran Hollander (0-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in 2.2 frames.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2

  • The Bears landed the first blow of the nightcap in the first inning as Kyle Rosenfeld scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
  • The Sea Gulls countered with two in the second. Ben Anderson was hit by a pitch and took second on a passed ball, then after a walk and a sac bunt, Max Ehrhardt ripped a two-run double to left center to vault SU into the lead, 2-1.
  • In the top of the third, Dylan Winebrenner singled to lead off and advanced to third on a Danny Sheeler base-knock. Adam Tommer then brought Winebrenner home on a sac fly to make it 3-1.
  • Ursinus got that run back in the home third as Will Kelley singled, took second on a balk, and scored on a Jakob Cantor base hit to make it 3-2.
  • In the fourth, George Nestor singled with one out and moved up on a sac bunt, and Kelley brought him home with a base hit to tie it at 3-3.
  • The game stayed knotted up until the seventh, when Tim Petrucelli belted a go-ahead solo home run to right. Later in the inning with two out and men on second and third, Trent Waire ripped a two-run double to right center to boost the Sea Gull advantage to 6-3.
  • SU broke it open with a six-run eighth. Petrucelli brought home the first with a single, followed by a Sheeler sac fly, Tommer two-run double, and Ehrhardt two-run single that gave the game its final 12-3 margin.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Tim Petrucelli went yard for the fifth time this season, finishing 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
  • Adam Tommer capped a monster doubleheader by going 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs, and three runs scored. In the two games, Tommer managed five hits and plated seven runs.
  • Max Ehrhardt batted 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, while Andrew Kell managed four hits and scored once at the top of the lineup.
  • Ethan Hirschfeld (2-1) tossed six innings of one-run, three-hit ball in relief to finish off the game and earn the win. Hirschfeld walked none and struck out four.
  • Tyler Villa lasted three innings in his start, giving up two runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.

URSINUS GAME NOTES

  • Will Kelley batted 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI at the top of the Bears' lineup.
  • Kyle Rosenfeld went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
  • David Morgan (1-1) pitched seven innings in a losing effort, allowing six runs on 10 hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

UP NEXT

  • The Sea Gulls return home to face McDaniel on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch from Donnie Williams Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
