DAVENPORT, Fla. – The William Paterson baseball team (5-7) was handed a 5-4 loss in 10 innings by Wisconsin-La Crosse (5-2) at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational March 18.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sophomore Sean McAllister drew a base on balls to open the top of the third and later scored on a wild pitch to give William Paterson the early 1-0 edge.
- In the fourth, the Pioneers had runners on first and second when senior Noah Cabassa ripped an RBI single into right field before McAllister drove in a run on a single through the right side to make it a three-run game (3-0).
- The Eagles trimmed the deficit to two (3-1) in the bottom of the fourth after a base hit was logged with runners on the corners.
- It remained a two-run game until Wisconsin-La Crosse plated another run in the seventh to pull within one (3-2).
- The Pioneers got one run back in the top of the ninth after junior Connor Luckie hit a sacrifice fly to right with the bases loaded.
- However, the Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
- In the 10th, Wisconsin-La Crosse opened the frame with a double to left center. After the runner advanced to third on a groundout to the right side of the infield, the Pioneers intentionally walked back-to-back batters. The Eagles were able to get the run across though on a sacrifice fly to left to claim the 5-4 win.
