Washington and Lee Blanks Southern Virginia, 14-0

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team used a seven-run sixth inning to defeat the Southern Virginia University Knights, 14-0, on Tuesday night at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Generals (10-7) struck first in the bottom of the 1st inning as Paul Ramseur led off the inning with a double to left center field. Ramseur would move over to third on a Drew Larsenground out before plating the Generals' first run on a wild pitch. 
  • Jonathan French reached base safely following an error but would move to third base on a throwing error by the Knights' (2-10) second baseman in the second inning. Frankie Maloofwould bring him home on a sacrifice fly to center field, putting the Blue and White up 2-0. 
  • French would draw a walk in the 4th inning before stealing second then advancing to third on an error by the SVU catcher. French would come around to score as Ethan Zulueta roped a single up the middle, giving the Generals a 3-0 lead. 
  • After Maloof singled through the right side, he would come around to score on a Ramseur RBI single to extend the Generals' lead. Jacob Jackson blasted a double off the top of the left center fence, driving in Julian Domench and Ramseur to give W&L a 6-0 lead.
  • The Blue and White recorded seven runs on five hits in the 5th inning to extend their lead to 13-0. Larsen led off the inning with a triple to center field before coming around to score on a wild pitch. French drove in Landen Rucker with a sacrifice bunt before Jaden Keuhner came around to score on a fielder's choice. 
  • The Generals plated two of their runs on an error by the Knights' third baseman as Zulueta and Domenech came around to score to give the Generals a 11-0 lead. 
  • Ramseur came around to score as Larsen poked a single through the left side of the infield before Jackson scored the 13th run of the game on a passed ball. 
  • The Blue and White scored their 14th and final run of the game in the 6th inning as Domenech roped a double down the left field line, driving in Maloof from first base. 

W&L GAME NOTES

  •  The Generals split the season series with the Knights' as they improved to 10-7 on the season. 
  • W&L recorded 14 runs on 11 hits this evening while shutting out their first opponent since they beat Averett University 8-0 on Feb. 15, 2020. 
  • Paul RamseurDrew LarsenEthan Zulueta and Frankie Maloof each recorded two hits this evening, while Ramseur and Larsen each had extra base hits. 
  • Julian Domenech and Jacob Jackson recorded a game-high two RBI. 
  • Matt Fleming (2-0) picked up his second win of the season as he tossed four shutout innings, allowing five hits while retiring three batters. Ben Sundell pitched two innings in relief, allowing no hits and striking out four batters. 


SVU GAME NOTES

  • The Knights fall to 2-10 on the season. 
  • Carson Bybee (0-2) was credited with the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit in two innings pitched. 
  • Stockton Hall and Mitch Smith each recorded two hits for SVU this evening. 

UP NEXT

  • The Generals head to Harrisonburg, Va. tomorrow afternoon for an ODAC match up with Eastern Mennonite University at 3 p.m.
