Three-run Kaplin double leads Marietta over Kenyon

MARIETTA, Ohio — Ben Kaplin lined a three-run double to the wall in left center field in the bottom of the ninth inning as Marietta College came from six runs down to beat Kenyon College by the score of 7-6 Wednesday (Mar. 20) evening at Pioneer Park. The Etta Express improves to 8-8 on the season, while Kenyon falls to 12-4 overall.
 
Marietta committed an uncharacteristic four errors that resulted in five unearned runs as Kenyon built a 6-0 lead through five innings. While the Owl offense was taking advantage of Marietta's miscues, Kenyon starting pitcher Theo Canning was frustrating the Etta Express hitters.
 
Canning, aided by three double plays, faced the minimum number of batters through the first five innings. He blanked the Pioneers for six innings before allowing a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.
 
The Owls grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth as a Pioneer error extended the inning. Drew Robinson led off and reached on an error. He stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Edwin Groff doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on an infield single from Dustin Lee. Three more Marietta errors led to four unearned runs in the fifth inning.
 
Cooper Fiehrer plated Marietta's first two runs with a single up the middle in the seventh inning. Alex Richter walked and Kaplin doubled and then Fiehrer drove them in with his base hit. A Kenyon dropped fly ball resulted in two unearned runs for Marietta in the eighth making it 6-4.
 
Cael Magill led off the ninth with a single up the middle. Kenyon went to the bullpen and put Jack Enger on the mound. Following a strikeout, Cole Yeager lined a single to right moving Magill to second. Jeremy Tonelli grounded out moving the runners to second and third. Richter was hit by a pitch loading the bases for Kaplin. Kaplin lined a 2-1 pitch into the game clearing the bases and giving the Pioneers the walk-off victory.
 
Trent Valentine started on the mound for Marietta and pitched 2.0 innings with one hit and five strikeouts. Kail Hill allowed two unearned runs on two hits in 2.0 innings. Zach Marzetz gave up four runs, one earned, in 1.0 innings. Jacob Rocky allowed one hit and struck out two in 2.0 innings. Gabe Torres (3-0) worked the final 2.0 innings for the win.
 
Canning started and threw 6.0 innings for Kenyon. He gave up two runs on five hits. Peyton Hodges gave up one unearned run on two hits in 1.0 inning of work. Noah Rosenberg allowed two runs on one hit in 1.0 inning. Enger (0-1) was tagged with the loss giving up two runs ontwo hits in 0.2 innings.
 
Kaplin had two hits in the game, both doubles, and drove in three runs. Fiehrer had two hits and two RBI. Austin Amburgey and Yeager also had two hits in the game.
 
Marietta opens Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday (Mar. 23) at Mount Union. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
