Tornados Win Saturday Night Marathon 13-12

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (11-7, 4-0 USA South) improved to 4-0 in the USA South Conference with a 13-12 marathon victory over Pfeiffer University (7-9, 0-4 USAS) on Saturday night at Joe Ferebee Field in Miseneimer, North Carolina.

The two sides combined for 25 runs, 28 hits, and six errors in the exciting matchup, with the Tornados holding on to a one-run lead to take their fifth-straight victory overall over Pfeiffer.

A one-out single from Luke Morton in the top of the first kicked off a three-run opening frame for the Tornados, as Caleb Oehler notched a two-out single before Frankie Vasquez plated Morton with a two-out RBI single. Kenny Pridmore followed suit with a two-RBI double that cleared the bases and pushed BC's lead to a 3-0 margin.

Hayden Jennings launched his first career home run to lead off the top of the second inning, while a wild pitch scored Lucas Granata to extend the Brevard lead even further. Oehler drove in Morton on a sacrifice fly, and Vasquez totaled his second RBI single in as many innings to give the Tornados an early 7-0 lead.

Pfeiffer was able to find its offense in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on four hits to cut the deficit down to two runs, 7-5.

Cameron Cook (2-0) settled into the game over the next three innings, shutting down the Falcons through the fifth inning. Logan Clark put the Tornados back up by three runs with an RBI single, while Oehler launched his second home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning to push the Brevard lead to five runs, 10-5.

Pfeiffer rallied back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on five hits off Andy Fahringer, trimming the BC lead down to just one run, 10-9. A bases-loaded walk and a Pridmore RBI groundout in the top of the seventh gave Brevard some breathing room, 12-9, while Pfeiffer used a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 12-10 ballgame with two innings left to play.

Joc Pledger was entered into the game to pinch run after a leadoff walk, and scored an insurance run for the Tornados to make the score 13-10. The Falcons put a threat together quickly, loading the bases with one out to chase Cesar Rodriguez off the mound for BC. Ethan Coleman came on in relief, and despite a pair of bases-loaded wild pitches that brought the Falcons back within one, further damage was prevented as the Tornados were three outs away from their fourth conference victory of the season.

Matthew Evans (Sv 2) was called on to earn his second save in as many games. The sophomore RHP from Yulee, Florida got the first batter he faced out, but the Falcons put the tying and winning runs on base with a HBP and a single. An infield fly was called on a shallow fly ball to left field, and a Falcon runner was doubled up advancing to third, ending the wild series opener in bizarre fashion as BC escaped with the one-run win, 13-12.

Oehler had a career day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a two-run homer. Morton went 3-for-5 with a team-best four runs scored and Vasquez also totaled three hits with three RBI. Pridmore logged three RBI, and Jennings capped BC's stellar offensive outing with his first collegiate home run.

Pfeiffer was paced by Wilson Lohrer, who racked up three hits that included two doubles.

The two sides will square off in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. at Joe Ferebee Field in Misenheimer.
