No. 4 Salisbury Baseball splits pair with Haverford; Villa twirls gem in nightcap

SALISBURY, Md. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team split a doubleheader against the Haverford Fords on Sunday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium, dropping the opener 7-4 but salvaging the finale 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME ONE

  • Andrew Kell led off the first inning with a base hit, then after a sac bunt and a walk Dylan Winebrenner tagged an RBI single into center to score Kell and put SU on top 1-0.
  • In the top of the third, the Fords loaded the bases on a walk and two errors, and Luke Treese worked a bases-loaded free pass to force in a run. Jack Wallis came up next and cracked a grand slam to left, vaulting Haverford ahead 5-1.
  • The Fords tacked on two more in the top of the fourth. With two down and men in scoring position, Treese belted a wind-assisted two-run double to left to make it 7-1.
  • The Sea Gulls began clawing back in the sixth. With the bases juiced after three singles, Dom Frigiola snuck an RBI single through the left side. Ethan Ruiz came up next and hit a grounder to short for a fielder's choice, but the shortstop's throw to first sailed wide, allowing two SU runs to score and cut the deficit to 7-4.
  • That's as close as SU would get, though, as Haverford's Drew Doyle shut the home side down over the final three innings to seal the deal for the Fords.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Dylan Winebrenner batted 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI to lead the Sea Gulls.
  • Dom Frigiola went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Adam Tommer legged out two infield hits and scored a run.
  • Benji Thalheimer (1-1) absorbed the loss after surrendering four unearned runs on three walks in 2.1 innings.

HAVERFORD GAME NOTES

  • Jack Wallis belted the go-ahead grand slam in the Fords' five-run third.
  • Luke Treese finished 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
  • Kendrick Curry went 1-for-2 with a steal and two runs scored.
  • Mike Rabayda (3-1) tossed 5.2 innings of four-run (three earned), nine-hit ball with three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win.
  • Drew Doyle picked up his first save with three scoreless innings to finish the game.

GAME TWO

  • The Sea Gulls opened the scoring in the fourth inning. Ben Anderson reached on a two-base error at third, then two batters later Roman Keith tagged a two-run home run to left, putting SU in the driver's seat at 2-0.
  • Kyle Beach cut the Fords' deficit in half with a solo shot to left in the top of the seventh to make it 2-1.
  • In the home seventh, Andrew Kell was plunked to lead off and took second on a sac bunt. After a walk and another hit batsman loaded the bases, Danny Sheeler lifted a sac fly to the warning track in center, plating Kell to push the lead back to 3-1.
  • Haverford threatened in the ninth by putting two runners on, but Brian Wilson made a circus catch in center off a tough Kendrick Curry flyball and Garrett Beaver struck out Pranav Rane to finish the job.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Roman Keith finished 1-for-3 with a two-run homer for his first collegiate hit.
  • Danny Sheeler went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Andrew Kell scraped together two hits and scored a run.

  • Garrett Beaver nailed down his first save with an inning and two-thirds scoreless work. Shawn Rosemond got one out as a bridge from Villa to Beaver.

HAVERFORD GAME NOTES

  • Kyle Beach finished 4-for-4 with a solo homer to pace the Fords.
  • Daniel Rosman went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Wyatt Mattison (2-1) took the hard-luck loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in six innings, walking two and fanning two on 80 pitches.
