Maroon Baseball sweeps Hampden-Sydney to remain in first place

The Short story: The Roanoke College baseball team swept Hampden-Sydney College Sunday 5-3 and 8-1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader. The Maroons move to 6-1 in conference play and are tied for first place with Randolph-Macon College.

How it happened (Game 1):
*After three scoreless innings, the Maroons struck for four runs in the top of the fourth. Justyn Steens brought in two with a single, Kyle Moshier had an RBI hit and Corey Coogan lofted a sacrifice fly.
*Roanoke added an insurance run on a Nate Prince sacrifice fly in the sixth to make it 5-0.
*The Tigers rallied for one run in the seventh and scored two in the ninth but got no closer.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Thomas Burgess went the distance on the hill for Roanoke, striking out six while allowing just six hits, two walks and three earned runs
*Cayden Freels was 2-3 with a double and Hayden Giordano and Steens also had two hits.
*Matthew Arnold had two hits for HSC.   

How it happened (Game 2):
*The Maroons took over the nightcap early, plating seven runs in the second inning. Moshier and Giordano each had two-run hits in the frame.
*Jonny Wall belted a solo home run in the fourth and two Maroon pitchers allowed just five hits.

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Wall finished 3-5 with two runs and two RBI and Dylan Bonzon also had three hits.
*Giordano had a double and a walk.
*Mason Roy earned the win with six scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Gardner Meeks got the start on the mound and gave up one earned run in his three innings with four strikeouts.
*Jack Wilson had two hits for Hampden-Sydney (7-12/1-8 ODAC).

*Roanoke (10-11/6-1 ODAC) opens a six-game homestand on Tuesday, hosting Guilford College at 4 p.m. in another conference game.
