Marietta loses to #6 Denison

MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 6 ranked Denison University scored eight runs in the middle three innings to beat Marietta College by the score of 11-4 Monday (Mar. 25) evening at Pioneer Park. The loss drops Marietta to 8-11 on the season, while Denison improves to 16-2 overall.
 
Marietta took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Cooper Fiehrer was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Following a strikeout, Trent Valentine doubled right-center moving Fiehrer to third. Infield singles from Jeremy Tonelli and Cole Yeager plated Fiehrer and Valentine.
 
Denison cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the third. Jake Blozy reached on a two-out single. Noah Leib drove in Blozy with a double to the wall in centerfield.
 
The Big Red added three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Owen Wilson had a two-run single and Alex Vazquez plated one run with a single to left in the fourth inning. The big blow in the sixth was a grand slam over the wall in left field off the bat of Cade Nowik.
 
Austin Amburgey had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring Diego DeCello, who reached on a single and moved to third on a pair of Denison errors. Marco Vesce worked a bases-loaded walk in the ninth to plate Marietta's final run.
 
Robbie Lee (2-1) got the win for Denison in relief of starter George Viebrock. Lee worked 3.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Viebrock was charged with two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings. Nate Dinges earned his first save throwing 3.2 innings and giving up one run on one hit.
 
Austin Ziance (1-2) started and took the loss. He pitched 3.0 innings and gave up four runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Three other Pioneers pitched in relief.
 
Tonelli was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game. Valentine had a double.
 
Marietta hosts Ohio Northern University for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday (Mar. 29). The first game is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
