St. Olaf improves to 4-1 on Florida trip after defeating Williams

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The St. Olaf College baseball team improved to 4-1 on its trip to Florida with a 7-3 win over Williams College on Tuesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.

St. Olaf (9-7) jumped out to an early lead with a four-run second inning and led Williams (4-6) by at least three runs the rest of the way to claim its third consecutive victory. Four pitchers combined to limit the Ephs to one earned run with eight strikeouts in the win.

In his first collegiate start, first year Sam Hruska surrendered just an unearned run over the first 3.0 innings before giving way to three relievers. Junior Matthew Oberlander struck out three over the next 2.0 frame, yielding a run on three hits. First year Carter Follman picked up his second win of the season by striking out two and facing the minimum of six batters in the sixth and seventh before senior Brock Brumley fanned two over the final 2.0 innings.

Senior Sam Lavin reached base all five times for St. Olaf, going 2-for-2 with three walks and three RBI. Junior Evan Hammonds collected his second three-hit game of the season and drove in a run, while sophomore Mason Buck had two hits and sophomore Brendan Goldman knocked in two runs.

Six of St. Olaf's first seven batters reached base safely in the four-run second inning. Goldman and Hammonds recorded RBI singles in the inning before Lavin delivered a two-run single after coming to bat with the bases loaded and one out.

Williams got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the third to snap the Oles' scoreless inning streak at 21 dating back to last Friday's game against Augustana College. St. Olaf added two runs to its cushion to open up a 6-1 lead on a pair of fielder's choices in the third and got its final run of the game on a run-scoring single by Lavin in the sixth to make it 7-2.

The Oles close out their trip with a single game against DePauw University on Wednesday, March 27 at 9:30 a.m. CDT at Northeast Regional Park.
