Gibbs Dominant as Mitchell Pushes Past Lasell

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College junior Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.) turned in a dominant performance over Lasell University in GNAC action on Tuesday afternoon, twirling eight innings of one-run ball to power the Mariners past the Lasers by a 6-1 final.

Gibbs surrendered just four hits and struck out two to improve his record to 4-0 on the season for the Mariners, who have reeled off three consecutive victories to open conference play.

Senior Owen Robbins (East Lyme, Conn.) finished 2-5 with a double, one RBI, and one run scored. Fellow senior Cole Calli (Coventry, Conn.) added a double and a pair of RBI, freshman Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) drove in a run on a base hit, and senior Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR) picked up two hits and two runs.

The Mariners jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, plating one run in the first on a Lasell error, before Terni Jr. laced an RBI single to right field in the third, and Calli followed that up with a two-run double to left. One more run scored for the Mariners on a groundout in the top of the fourth, before a double off the bat of Robbins sent Galindez home in the seventh inning.

The Lasers mustered one run off Gibbs, as junior Tim Callahan scampered home on the fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Sophomore Jacob Quiles (Wallkill, N.Y.) came out of the bullpen to spell Gibbs, and worked a scoreless ninth inning.

Lasell starter Matthew Fletcher allowed five runs (four earned) across four innings of work to earn the loss, dropping his record to 2-2 this spring.

Graduate student Brad Edwards finished 2-3 with a walk for the Lasers, accounting for half of his team's four hits.

Winners of three straight, the Mariners (11-6, 3-0 GNAC) will return to their home diamond on Wednesday, March 27th, when they host Clark University in a non-conference game scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm. Lasell (10-7, 0-1 GNAC) will also return to play on Wednesday, March 27th, when they play Brandeis University in non-conference action.
