No. 5 Salisbury Baseball submerges Washington (Md.), 17-6

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team earned a season sweep of its Delmarva Peninsula rival, overwhelming the Washington College Shoremen, 17-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls pounced on Washington early with a five-run first inning. Andrew Kell singled to lead off and Kyle Brex tripled him home. Tim Petrucelli then hit a sac fly to left that got dropped, allowing Brex to score. After a Dylan Winebrenner single, Danny Sheeler cracked an RBI double to right center. Dom Frigiola and Adam Tommer then hit into back-to-back RBI groundouts to put SU ahead 5-0.
  • The Shoremen got a chunk of those runs back in the top of the third. With one down and a man on second, Ty Everitt pounded an RBI double. Two batters later Logan Yi went deep to left center for a two-run homer to get WAC within 5-3.
  • Salisbury punched back with another five-spot in the bottom of the third. With two on and one out, Tommer tagged an RBI double into right center, then Brian Wilson and Mickey Haynes brought in a run each on a groundout and single, respectively. After a walk and a double steal, Brex brought two more home on a base hit to get it to 10-3.
  • SU tacked on another in the fourth on a Wilson sac fly to make it 11-3. Then in the fifth, Haynes was hit by a pitch, stole second, and came all the way around to score on a wild pitch to make it 12-3.
  • Washington put up three runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Everitt and a Cole McGee RBI double to get within 12-6.
  • The Sea Gulls got all three back in the home seventh. Two came home on a Petrucelli single-plus-error, and Petrucelli scored from third in a wild pitch to make it 15-6.
  • Kell brought home SU's final runs with a two-run single in the eighth, giving the game its final 17-6 margin.
