Hampden-Sydney Upsets Visiting No. 17 Lynchburg 3-2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior Grayson Harris (Moseley) collected three hits and one RBI, including a game-winning RBI single in the seventh inning, and sophomore Matthew Arnold (Danville) also had three hits and one RBI, while sophomore Jack Wilson (Petersburg) scored the game-winning run, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind upset past nationally-ranked No. 17 University of Lynchburg on Thursday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball action on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore Jackson Barnett (Ashland) gained the pitching win in relief, the first of his collegiate career, and classmate Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) earned the mound save for the host Tigers (8-12, 2-8) against the visiting Hornets (15-7, 5-3). Lynchburg is also the defending NCAA Division III National Champions.

H-SC scored three runs on eight hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the sixth inning and the winning run in the seventh. Lynchburg scored two runs on 10 hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first inning and one run in the third.

In the sixth, Harris (3-4, RBI) led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third base when junior Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh) (1-3) singled to center field. Arnold (3-4, RBI) followed with a run-scoring single to center field that scored Harris to make it 2-1. A sacrifice bunt by junior team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) (1-3) moved Masterson to third and Arnold to second, and Masterson crossed the plate on an RBI ground ball off the bat of senior Tillman Butler (Culpeper) (RBI) to tie it at 2-2.

In the decisive seventh, Wilson drew a two-out walk and stole second base, scoring what proved to be the winning run when Harris contributed a clutch and game-winning RBI single to left field to provide the home team with the final margin of victory.

Sophomore Austin Sterling (Petersburg) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 6.0 solid innings, scattering seven hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and no walks. Junior Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) recorded one out, yielding two hits and no runs with one strikeout and no walks. Barnett (1-0) recorded two outs, allowing no hits and no runs with no strikeouts and no walks for his first career win. Fitz-Hugh (3) tossed the final 2.0 shutout innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout and one walk for his team-leading third save of the season.

H-SC plays on the road at ODAC opponent Guilford College on Saturday, March 30, a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
