Roanoke Withstands Ninth Inning Rally

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 6, Greensboro 4
Records: Maroons 12-11 / 7-1 ODAC, Pride 14-9 / 3-3 USA South
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: After picking up a conference win over Guilford (5-3) last night, the Maroons welcomed Greensboro College to Salem Memorial Ballpark for the first of two matchups with the Pride this season. Five runs in the fifth inning propelled the Maroons to a big lead. A Pride rally in the ninth would see the bases loaded, but Roanoke was able to secure the final out to preserve a 6-4, non-conference, win, running their win streak to five games.

Highlights:

  • Three consecutive walks would load the bases and when Jonny Wall drew ball four, RC was in front. Tucker Schiavoni greeted the new Greensboro pitcher with an RBI single ahead of a two-run sacrifice fly by Hayden Giordano. Cayden Freels plated Schiavoni with a base hit and the Maroons were up 5-0.
  • The Pride answered with an unearned run in the top of the sixth. In the bottom half, Roanoke would get the advantage back to five with a Wall single to score Corey Coogan.
  • Greensboro got one back in the eighth but RC still led 6-2 in the final frame.
  • With two outs, a pair of base hits and a base on balls would load the bases with one runner across. Wall made a potential game saving play on a hard-hit ball up the middle, keeping the ball on the infield and limiting the Pride to just one more run. Isaac Brooks got the final out for his first save of the year as Roanoke held on for a 6-4 win.
  • Schiavoni was 2-4 with a run and an RBI while Wall went 1-3 with a run scored and two driven in. Giordano was also 1-3 with a pair of RBI. Jon Rossi got the start, and the win, going six innings giving up just four hits, one run, and striking out three.

Up next: Roanoke is back in action at home this weekend when they host Washington and Lee for a double header on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for a noon opening pitch.
