Camphausen & Powers Combine for Seven RBIs in CWRU’s 12-5 Win at Emory

Case Western Reserve University graduate students Dane Camphausen and James Powers combined to drive in seven runs to lead the Spartans to a 12-5 win over Emory University during the teams' University Athletic Association opener in Atlanta on Friday afternoon.

The Spartans have now won seven straight games and nine of their last 10 to improve to 15-5 overall. CWRU also put an end to a three-game winning streak for Emory, which dropped to 13-10 for the campaign.

Camphausen went two-for-four with a double, four runs batted in, and a run scored in the game. Powers added a three-for-five day at the plate with two runs, three RBIs (increasing his team-leading total to 26), and a pair of stolen bases. Graduate student catcher Jack Anderson went two-for-four with a pair of doubles, a walk, and three runs scored, and graduate student left fielder Franco Alonso tallied a pair of hits as well, going two-for-four with a run scored.

Senior left-handed pitcher Reece Marley started and recorded the win in the game to improve to 3-2 on the campaign. He scattered six hits and two walks in the game while allowing four runs and striking out four batters. Senior right-handed pitcher Tyler Horvath added an inning and a third in relief, allowing just one run on three hits, while junior righties Jackson Brewer and Kyle Gearding each added a scoreless inning in relief to help close out the victory.

CWRU took a lead three batters into the game as junior center fielder Logan Andreyko was hit by a pitch to lead off the contest and a double by Anderson put two runners in scoring position. Powers followed with a single to left field to drive in the first run of the game and a one-out sacrifice fly from Camphausen plated Anderson and extended the team's lead to 2-0. Anderson doubled again in the top of the third and scored on a groundout by Camphausen to put the Spartans ahead by three runs.

Emory got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Spartans took advantage of two errors by the Eagles in the top of the fourth to score a pair of runs and take a 5-1 lead. The Eagles scored three in the bottom of the sixth to pull within a run, but Horvath notched the final out of the inning with the potential tying and go-ahead runners on the basepaths to preserve the CWRU lead.

The Spartans pulled away again in the top of the seventh with RBI hits from Powers, Camphausen, and first-year second baseman Tyler Stillson to extend their lead to 8-4. After Emory scored a run in the bottom of the inning, CWRU put the game away with four two-out runs in the eighth to make it a seven-run lead and put the game out of reach for Emory.

The Spartans finished the game with 14 hits, including four for extra bases, and stole five bases in the game.

Emory starter JT Rattigan suffered his first loss of the season in the game, falling to 4-1 for the season.

The Spartans and the Eagles will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon in Atlanta.
