Mulligan blanks Engineers in Game One; Seahawks rally down six to win pair on mercy rule

NEWPORT, R.I. (Saturday, March 30, 2024) - Salve Regina University baseball swept a pair of games from MIT, 11-0 and 16-6, with both ending after seven innings because of the 10-run rule in NEWMAC competition at Reynolds Field on Saturday afternoon. Sean Mulligan (Verona, N.J.) earned a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts in seven innings of Game One against the Engineers. The Seahawks (16-2, 3-0 NEWMAC) dug out of a 6-0 hole to score 16 unanswered runs in the nightcap.

All-Time Series: Salve Regina earned its first win ever against MIT in baseball before completing the sweep. The Engineers won the first meeting in 1989, then swept two in Tampa, Florida, in 2005. Then in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2012, the Engineers won 14-2. Today was the first ever visit to Newport for an MIT baseball team.

  • T2 - Seahawk starter Brayden Clark breezed through the top of the first with two Ks and a bouncer back to the mound. The Engineers started their six-run outburst reaching on an error. A hit batsman, sacrifice fly, and six singles later produced a 6-0 bulge. Jason Arrigo came in to stop the bleeding with a strikeout. | Engineers 6, Seahawks 0
  • B2Matt D'Amato led off with a double and moved to third on Tyler Cannoe's single. Tyler Petrosino delivered the run with a sacrifice fly to left. After the Seahawks loeaded the bases with one out, starter Chase Rubin induced a double-play grounder to end the frame. | Engineers 6, Seahawks 1
  • B3 - With one out, Evan O'Rourke singled and moved to third on Christian Homa's double. A wild pitch brought O'Rourke in for the second Seahawk run and D'Amato delivered Homa with the third. Cannoe reached on a fielder's choice grounder and the throw to second went wide and allowed D'Amato to move to third. He came home on a bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Shane Williams. A new Engineer hurler walked Michael Breen to make it 6-5 before Brandon Grover singled in the tying and go-ahead runs. | Seahawks 7, Engineers 6
  • B5 - Brandon Grover's two-run homer to center field started another inning where the Seahawks batted around the lineup. Evan O'Rourke singled and one out later Matt D'Amato battled for a base on balls. Tyler Cannoe's single was the 10th hit of the game for the Seahawks and brought in the 10th run. Tyler Petrosino doubled in a run and Wil McCarthy singled in two more. Shea Donovan added a perfectly-placed double down the right field line for an eight-run lead. | Seahawks 14, Engineers 6
  • B7 - Matt D'Amato hit his first home run of the season leading off the inning. Tyler Cannoe followed with his third hit of Game Two and sixth hit of the day. A walk to Petrosino brought in a new pitcher who hit his first batter, pinch-hitter Hunter Yaworski, to load the bases and then walked pinch-hitter Elliot Hamilton to score Cannoe for the final run. | Seahawks 16, Engineers 6
