Baseball Opens NCAC Play with a Split at Wooster

Wooster, Ohio - The Oberlin College baseball team erupted for a season-high 25 hits in an 18-5 game-two thrashing of the College of the Wooster Fighting Scots after dropping the lid-lifter 4-0 on Saturday at Art Murray Field.

First-year Kyle Baxt finished the day 9-for-11 with a homer, double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. The first baseman from Wellington, Florida, went 6-for-7 in the nightcap and has had at least one hit in 19 of the team's 20 games this season.

Anton Shelton and Nik Mezzanonte each went 4-for-6 with three runs scored, while Zach Masnikoff also scored three times to go along with three hits and three runs batted in. Ethan Hurwitz poked his team-leading fourth home run as he, Harry Kaplan, and David Curtin each had two hits in the win.

The victory comes nearly seven years ago to the day when Oberlin last beat Wooster on April 1, 2017, when the Yeomen topped the Scots 7-3 in 10 innings. Current Oberlin assistant coach Tyler Schuch started on the mound for the Scots, giving up three runs on seven hits over five innings in the no-decision.

Oberlin pitching fanned 16 Wooster hitters in the sequel, led by freshman Davis Hayes (2-0), who was sensational out of the Oberlin bullpen as he racked up eight punchouts while allowing just two hits and one walk over 5.1 innings.

Wooster led 5-0 after two innings and appeared to be well on its way to a sweep before the Yeomen bats would come to life over the final seven frames.

Baxt got Oberlin on the board in the top part of the third with a two-run homer, marking his third round-tripper of the year. The Wooster lead would shrink down to just one an inning later when Masnikoff and Joe Strabley led off the fourth inning with back-to-back doubles.

However, it was the fifth inning when it would all unravel for the Scots as the Yeomen plated six runs on six hits and four Wooster errors in the inning. Masnikoff had a two-run single in the rally, while Brady Groves and Harry Kaplan also picked up an RBI in the barrage.

Oberlin would tack on two more runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings and following a 30-minute lightning delay, would return to post five more tallies in the ninth on a two-RBI single by Kaplan and a three-run home run from Hurwitz.

Rookie reliever Micah Rodriguez recorded the final five outs on the bump - four of which came via the strikeout as he and Davis combined to allow just three hits and two walks over the final seven innings.

Oberlin stranded 10 men on base in game one, unable to find a timely hit against Scots starter Corey Knauf (3-2) as he sprinkled seven hits and went walk-free over 6.2 innings before giving way to Constantine Vernadakis (1) over the final 2.1 innings.

Jay Aghanya (1-1) did all he could to keep the Yeomen in it, tossing 5.1 innings before departing with two runs allowed on five hits and three walks to accompany his strikeouts.

It was zeros across the board until the sixth inning when the Scots posted a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a squeeze bunt. They would add two more in the seventh and that was more than enough insurance for Vernadakis to finish off the win for Wooster.

Oberlin had nine hits in the game, led by Baxt's 3-for-4 showing. Curtin and Kaplan each finished with two hits in the loss.

Oberlin sits at 11-9 overall, matching its win total from all of last season with 20 games left to play.

The Yeomen are scheduled to host Hiram College on Tuesday with the first pitch of game one set for noon.
