Hampden-Sydney Splits Doubleheader At Eastern Mennonite; Wins Nightcap 12-3, Drops Opener 8-5

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) had three hits, including a three-run home run, along with five RBIs, and junior Grayson Harris (Moseley) collected five hits, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader on the road at Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg. Sophomore Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) gained the pitching win in the 12-3 nightcap for the visiting Tigers (11-14, 5-10), while classmate Jake Williams (Chesapeake) took the pitching setback in the 8-5 opener against the host Royals (8-16, 5-8).

In game one, H-SC scored five runs on 10 hits with four errors … scoring two runs in the second inning, one run in the fourth and two runs in the ninth. EMU scored eight runs on 13 hits with two errors … scoring two runs in the first inning, one run in the second, two runs in the third and three runs in the fifth.

In the second, senior Julian Franks-Pollock (Virginia Beach) (2-4) singled with two outs and stole second base. Sophomore Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (1-3) was hit by a pitch, before Harris (2-5) singled to load the bases, and junior Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-4, 2 RBIs) followed with a two-run single through the right side to score both Franks-Pollock and Wilson to make it 2-2.

In the fourth, Wilson tripled to right field with two outs and crossed the plate on a fielding error at shortstop to get within 5-3.

In the ninth, Masterson walked to lead-off and advanced to second base on a single to left center field by senior Lucas Burnette (Hurt) (1-1), and the bases were loaded with no outs after a single to left center by junior team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) (2-4). Masterson scored on an RBI single to left center by Farr (1-4, RBI), and Burnette crossed the plate on an RBI ground ball off the bat of sophomore Hunter Powell (Ridgeway) (RBI), who was pinch-hitting, to provide for the final three-run margin.

Williams (1-2) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, all earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Sophomore Jackson Barnett (Ashland) pitched the final 5.1 innings, scattering six hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, H-SC scored 12 runs on 13 hits with no errors … scoring three runs in the first inning, one run in the second, three more runs in the third, one run in the fifth, three runs again in the sixth and one run in the eighth. EMU scored three runs on six hits with three errors … scoring one run in the first inning and two runs in the ninth.

In the first, Harris (3-4) doubled to right field to open the nightcap and scored on a throwing error during a ground ball out. Masterson followed with a walk and stole second base, scoring on an RBI double down the right field line by Farr (2-4, 4 RBIs), and Farr crossed the plate when Burnette (2-4, RBI) added a run-scoring single to right field for an early 3-0 advantage.

In the second, Harris singled to right center field with one out, stole second and later scored on an RBI single by Lancaster (1-5, RBI) for a 4-1 lead.

In the third, Franks-Pollock (2-2) walked with one out and moved to third base on a single down the right field line by freshman Trey Shrock (Appomattox) (1-4), who advanced to second on the throw. Both Franks-Pollock and Shrock crossed the plate via a two-run single through the left side by sophomore Turner Fitzpatrick (Richmond) (1-4, 2 RBIs), and Fitzpatrick later scored on a wild pitch for a 7-1 advantage.

In the fifth, Franks-Pollock doubled to left field to begin the at-bat, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Shrock and scored on another wild pitch to make it 8-1.

In the sixth, Wilson reached on a fielding error at third base and stole second ahead of a walk to Masterson. Wilson and Masterson crossed the plate ahead of Farr, who slammed his third home run of the season, also his third homer in the last five games, for an 11-1 lead. Farr is now tied for the team lead in home runs.

In the eighth, senior Tillman Butler (Culpeper) scored on another wild pitch while pinch-running for a 12-1 lead.

Miller-Bopp (2-1) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 8.0 solid innings for the victory, scattering five hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Sophomore Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) tossed the final 1.0 inning, yielding one hit and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and two walks.

H-SC returns home to welcome ODAC opponent and archrival Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday, April 9, at 3:30 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. The Yellow Jackets are receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25.
