Anderson Records 200th-Career Hit; Spartans Complete Sweep of Brandeis with 12-0 Win

Case Western Reserve University graduate student catcher Jack Anderson became the fourth player in program history to record 200 career hits as the Spartans completed a four-game sweep of the Brandeis University Judges with a 12-0 win in seven innings at Nobby's Ballpark on Sunday morning.

The win extended the Spartans' winning streak to six games, as the team improved to 21-6 overall and 7-1 in University Athletic Association play. Brandeis fell to 4-17 overall with a 0-4 UAA ledger following the setback.

Anderson, who went three-for-five in the game with three singles, a run, and an RBI, wasted little time reaching the milestone, accomplishing the feat in the first inning of the game. He joined former Spartans Chad Mullins (2008-11), Matt Keen (2010-13), and Andrew Gronski (2012-15) as the only players in program history to eclipse 200 career hits.

Nine different Spartans recorded at least one hit in the game as CWRU totaled 17 hits in the contest. In addition to Anderson, junior left fielder Logan Andreyko went three-for-four with a run and two RBIs, graduate student third baseman James Powers was two-for-five with his team-leading 12 double of the season and three RBIs (giving him a team-high 36 for the season), graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen registered a two-for-three showing with a pair of doubles and two runs scored, and senior designated hitter Zack Carinci went three-for-four with two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base.

On the mound, first-year Tyler Stillson and sophomore Austin McGowan combined for the team's second shutout in the last three games. Stillson went the first five-and-a-third innings, scattering six hits and striking out seven batters without issuing a walk, improving to 4-0 on the campaign with a 3.68 ERA. McGowan retired all four batters he faced in the game, including three by strikeout, to close out the win.

After Stillson pitched a scoreless first, the first three batters of the game singled for the Spartans, including Anderson's 200th-career hit and an RBI single by Powers that put CWRU ahead 1-0. In the second, a run-scoring single from Anderson followed by a two-RBI doubles from Powers extended the team's lead to 4-0. The Spartans scored three more in the third, all with two outs, as junior left fielder Jay Smith plated a run with a double and Andreyko drove in two more with a single to increase the CWRU advantage to 7-0.

CWRU continued to add to the lead with a run in the fourth after Camphausen doubled with two outs and scored a batter later on a single by Carinci. In the bottom of the sixth, four more CWRU runs crossed the plate, including one on an RBI single from senior outfielder Connor Stephenson to increase the Spartans' lead to 12-0 and put the game to an early end due to the 10-run rule after McGowan retired the Brandeis side in order in the top of the seventh.

Brandeis starter Sean Decker-Jacoby suffered the loss in the game to fall

The Spartans will now turn their attention toward a key non-conference midweek matchup against third-ranked Denison University in Granville, Ohio on Wednesday, April 10. The first pitch of the game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
