Cortland Sweeps Brockport, Extends Win Streak to Nine

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland starting pitchers Devin Georgetti (Rochester/Gates Chili) and Will McCarthy (Farmingdale) each turned in solid performances as the Red Dragons swept visiting Brockport, 5-3 and 3-1, in a SUNYAC baseball doubleheader. Cortland extended its winning streak to nine games and is now 15-8-1 overall and 9-0 in the SUNYAC. Brockport fell to 13-7 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Georgetti gave up nine hits, struck out 11 batters and didn't walk anyone in eight innings. He allowed three runs, but only one after the second inning. McCarthy allowed four hits and one run in his eight frames with six strikeouts and no walks. Both pitchers improved to 2-1 on the season with their victories.

Cortland 5, Brockport 3

Brockport grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a two-out rally. Nick Mahar singled and moved to third on a Jason Mansel double. Aaron Sisto drove in both runs with a single through the left side. The Golden Eagles registered three hits in the fourth, but the first batter who reached was erased when Cortland center fielder Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) threw him out after he rounded second too far after the second hit. Bonacci finished the doubleheader with three outfield assists.

Cortland broke through versus Brockport starter Matt McGowan in the bottom of the fifth. Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) led off with a homer to left center to cut the deficit to 2-1. JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) singled and was bunted to second by Nick Chemotti (Syracuse/West Genesee). Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck) was hit by a pitch, and DeLawder moved to third on a wild pickoff throw by Brockport's catcher. With two outs, Bonacci drove in both runners with a double to left center.

The Red Dragons added what proved to be valuable insurance runs in the eighth. Mat Bruno (Rye) doubled and Nolan Smith (Hamburg) was hit by a pitch. Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) bunted the runners to second and third. Bruno scored on a wild pitch and Mackenzie followed with an RBI single to center to score Smith.

Brockport's TJ Strevell led off the ninth with a homer to make it 5-3. Zack Zarrilli (Farmingdale) entered in relief and recorded an out before allowing a Mansel single. Justin Patsey (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) was brought in at that point and induced a game-ending double play grounder for his second save of the season.

Bruno finished 3-for-3 and Mackenzie was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Cortland. Mahar and Mansell each were 3-for-4 for Brockport. McGowan allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks in six and two thirds innings.

Cortland 3, Brockport 1

Cortland did all of its damage offensively in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Bruno tripled to center and scored on Mackenzie's single to left. Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas) followed with a two-run homer to right center.

Brockport had only one runner reach scoring position versus McCarthy through the first seven innings, albeit only briefly. David Belsito singled with two outs and Cole Traudt singled to center, but Bonacci threw out Belsito trying to advance to third on the play. The Golden Eagles got on the board in the eighth on a two-out, pinch-hit homer by Brian Tietjen.

Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius) entered to start the ninth. Following a strikeout, Cole Traudt doubled to deep center but was thrown out on a relay from Bonacci to shortstop Marola to third baseman Dylan Tierney (East Greenbush/Columbia) for the second out. A pop-out to second ended the game as Lynch earned his first save of the season.

Bruno, Mackenzie, Chemotti and Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) each finished 2-for-4 for Cortland, which posted 10 hits. Traudt was 2-for-4 for the Golden Eagles. Brockport starter Justin DelVecchio allowed three runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk in five and two thirds innings. Troy Liebert gave up only one hit and no runs with two strikeouts over the final two and a third innings.
