Roanoke Baseball splits at No. 7 Shenandoah

The Short story: The Roanoke College baseball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Sunday at No. 7 Shenandoah University, dropping the first game 3-2 but rebounding for a 7-3 win in game two.

The Maroons are tied for first place in the ODAC with Randolph-Macon College, each with 10-2 conference records.

How it happened:
*The Hornets scored a run in the first inning of the opener and held the 1-0 lead until the seventh frame.
*Senior shortstop Jonny Wall belted a two-run home run to left field in the top of the seventh after Dylan Bonzon led off with a single.
*Shenandoah tied the game with a two-out infield single in the eighth and scored the winning run in the ninth, again with two outs, on a walk-off single from Jaime Padilla.
*The Hornets took an 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two but it didn't last long. Roanoke plated two in the fourth, one driven in on a Kyle Moshier double, and two in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.
*After SU cut the advantage to 4-2 in the sixth, Hayden Giordano smacked a three-run long ball to left center.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Thomas Burgess went seven strong innings in his start on the hill, scattering seven hits and a walk with two earned runs and three strikeouts.
*Bonzon and Nate Prince each had two hits.
*Padilla and Pearce Bucher each had two hits for Shenandoah.

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Jackson Murphy earned the win on the mound, working seven innings and allowing nine hits, no walks and two earned runs with six strikeouts.  
*Giordano was 3-4 with a double and three runs scored and Moshier also went 3-4.
*Tucker Schiavoni was 2-4 with a walk and two runs scored.  
*Shenandoah (19-8/8-6 ODAC) had five players with two hits each.

*Roanoke (16-13) travels to Averett University for another ODAC game Tuesday at 3 p.m.
