Otterbein takes two from Marietta

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Marietta College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Otterbein University Sunday (April 14) afternoon. Otterbein won the first game, 14-7, and then completed the sweep with an 8-7 win in game two. Marietta falls to 13-14 overall and 5-5 in the OAC. The Cardinals improve to 22-7 overall and 8-2 in the OAC.

Otterbein jumped out to an early 6-1 lead after scoring two runs in the second and four more in the third inning. The Pioneers took advantage of a Cardinal error to plate five unearned runs in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 6-6.

The Cardinals responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Brayden Quincel singled and then Gavin Thompson homered to left putting Otterbein back in front 8-6. Otterbein added five more runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Forrest Havanis (2-3) started on the mound for Marietta and took the loss allowing 10 runs, six earned, on 10 hits. Sam Johnson gave up four runs on three hits in 2.2 innings.

Bryson Bell (4-1) started and got the win for Otterbein. He worked 8.1 innings and gave up seven runs, two earned, on 11 hits. Sam Sethna retired both batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Alex Richter went 3-for-4 with a double and home run to lead the Pioneer offense. He also drove in two runs. Nick Bonnizzio, Jeremy Tonelli, and Cael Magill each had two hits in the game.

In game two, Otterbein led 7-4 through five innings. Marietta scored a run in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to tie the game, 7-7. Ben Kaplin plated the run in the seventh with a sac fly. Cooper Fiehrer had a sac fly in the eighth. Kaplin also knocked in the tying run in the ninth with a ground out.

Aided by two Marietta errors, the Cardinals won the game in the ninth. Max McCann reached on an error and moved to second on an infield single. He came around to score on a second Pioneer error.

Sethna (2-1) got the win in game two pitching the final 3.0 innings. He gave up two runs on one hit with one walk. Grady Kehr started and threw 4.1 innings allowing four runs on eight hits. Braydon McCloskey pitched 1.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits.

Gabe Torres (3-1) was tagged with the loss. He threw 4.1 innings and gave up one unearned run on four hits. Braden Shepherd started and worked 2.0 innings giving up three runs on three hits. Zach Marzetz allowed four runs on three hits in 2.1 innings.

Bonnizzio, Tonelli and Magill each had two hits in the game. Richter homered, while Bonnizzio, Diego DeCello, Austin Amburgey, Tonelli and Magill all had doubles.

Marietta returns home to host Muskingum University on Wednesday (April 17). First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
