No. 13 CNU Baseball Explodes for 18 Runs in Road Win at Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- On base machine Josh Reinhold reached in all six of his plate appearances and slugger Lincoln Lubsen connected on his second grand slam of the season to highlight a dominant offensive performance on Tuesday afternoon as the 13th-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team rolled to an 18-3 win on the road over Eastern Mennonite University.

The Captains improved to 21-7 overall this season after the bats exploded for their third double-digit scoring output in the last four games. CNU connected on 15 hits including six multi-hit showings by the Captains lineup against the Royals, who fall to 10-19 this season.

Hitting in the two hole on Tuesday, Reinhold wasted no time adding to his record-breaking on-base streak with a double down the line in the top of the first inning. With the first of his two hits, the sophomore shortstop has now reached in 70 consecutive games to take over sole possession of the fourth longest on-base streak in Division III history. Reinhold would go on to reach in all six of his plate appearances on Tuesday with two hits and four walks, setting a new personal record for reaching base in a single game.

In the second, the Captains would get on the board with a big inning by scoring seven runs on five hits and an error. Jacob Koenig started the run with a one-out single into left center while Aaron Maxie followed with a carbon copy into the same spot. The third straight rookie in the lineup, Gus Croll, then ripped a hard-hit single up the middle to load the bases for senior Scott Crosson. A deep fly ball by Crosson put the Captains on the board and triggered the red-hot two-out hitting offense as Reinhold came to the plate.

Reinhold picked up the first of his four walks to re-load the bases ahead of Zach Dzarnowski. All season long, the CNU offense has been opportunistic with two out, driving in 73 runs in the clutch situation. On Tuesday, Dzarnowski continued that trend with an RBI single into left field. Then, two batters later, it was Doc Daniels clearing the bases with a three-run triple for his 13th extra-base hit of the season.

Taking the 7-0 lead, the Captains were not satisfied and hung another five on the board in the top of the third. Again it was triggered by Koenig, reaching a walk to lead off the inning and, again, all five runs were driven in with two outs. Maxie reached on an error and Reinhold walked to load the bases for Dzarnowski, who in turn walked in a run on four pitches. That would bring up Lubsen in the bases loaded situation; the Captains' leading slugger turned on an 0-1 pitch and obliterated a towering shot over the wall in left field for his second grand slam of the season. The team's leading home run hitter blasted his sixth round-tripper of the season and added to his RBI count with 35 on the year.

While the Captains offense built the substantial lead, Marcus Dux worked quickly through the lineup in three innings on the mound of a predetermined staff day. Dux allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out a pair in the first three innings. In relief, Jack Braley worked a clean fourth before Ryan Morrison gave up three runs, one earned in the bottom of the fifth. Peter Hoenig and Kyle Lewis each came on for an inning to wrap up the day with Hoenig striking out a pair and Lewis closing out the day with a perfect 1-2-3 seventh in the win.

The bats were not done, adding two runs in the top of the fifth, two in the sixth, and two more in the top of the seventh. Reinhold opened the fifth with a single and then scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. Ayden Stuffel also singled in a run after Daniels reached on an infield single. In the sixth, a pair of CNU players crossed the plate on an error by the Royals and the Captains scored twice more in the seventh when Reinhold worked a bases loaded free pass and Will Pellegrino delivered a sacrifice fly to left field.

In addition to Reinhold and Lubsen leading the attack, the Captains got multi-hit performances from Crosson (2-5, 1 RBI), Daniels (2-5, 3 RBI, 1 R), Koenig (2-4, 3 R), Maxie (2-4, 2 R), and Croll (2-4, 1 R). CNU worked 10 walks in the game led by Reinhold's and seven different CNU players picked up at least one free pass.

Dux (1-0) earned his first win in a Captains' uniform and Eastern Mennonite's Josh Rudd (0-3) suffered the loss at home.

Christopher Newport will next play on April 24 with a road trip to nationally-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan at 6:00 p.m. The Captains will then face Washington and Lee at home on the following day at 3:00 pm.
