Camphausen Sets Single-Season Home Run Record as #17 CWRU Sweeps Doubleheader at NYU

Case Western Reserve University graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen homered in each game of a doubleheader on Saturday to set the program's single-season home run record and help lead the 17th-ranked Spartans to a sweep of a doubleheader against New York University on Saturday in Staten Island, New York. CWRU won the first game 12-7 before claiming a 3-1 victory in the second game.

CWRU improved to 26-8 overall with the two wins, including a 9-2 mark in University Athletic Association play. NYU dropped to 21-11 overall with an 8-7 conference mark.

Camphausen hit solo home runs in the second inning of each game to tie and then set the program's single-season home run record. With 12 home runs for the campaign, Camphausen passed the previous record of 11 home runs in a season, set first by Rocco Maue in 2018 and matched by current junior right fielder Nick Harms last year. Camphausen went five-for-eight with four runs, three RBIs, two doubles, and two home runs over the two games on Saturday and is now batting a team-high .387 with 47 RBIs this season.

Game 1 - CWRU 12, NYU 7
The Spartans never trailed in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, taking a 4-0 lead after three innings and pulling away late with a five-run seventh inning in a 12-7 win over the Violets.

Camphausen's record-tying home run in the top of the second inning gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, a sacrifice fly from graduate student third baseman James Powers followed by a two-run home run from Harms, his second of the series and 10th of the season, put CWRU in front 4-0.

A three-run home run in the bottom of the third pulled NYU back within a run. CWRU added on a run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from graduate student second baseman Franco Alonso to go ahead 5-3, but the Violets answered again with another run in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead back to one again. However, the Spartans would hit around on the top of the seventh with five runners crossing the plate to give CWRU a 10-4 advantage. Highlights from the frame included a two-run double by senior designated hitter Zack Carinci and a run-scoring triple from Alonso.

CWRU added two more runs in the eighth on RBI doubles from graduate student catcher Jack Anderson and Camphausen.

NYU added three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little too late for the Violets.

CWRU sophomore right-handed starter Archer Stankowski went the first five and a third innings of the game, allowing four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk to pick up the win and improve to 6-2 for the season. Junior righty Jackson Brewer pitched the final three and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk to secure his second save of the campaign.

Camphausen finished the game three-for-four with three runs, two RBIs, a double, and the home run. Junior left fielder Logan Andreyko added a two-for-four showing at the plate with a double and three runs, while Anderson was one-for-three with a double, three runs, an RBI, and three walks. Carinci went two-for-five in the game with a double, a run, and two RBIs.

NYU starter Paul Guerne suffered the loss, dropping to 3-2 on the year.

Game 2 - CWRU 3, NYU 1
Four Spartan pitchers combined to hold the Violets to one run on eight hits and strikeout 16 batters to help lead CWRU to a sweep with a 3-1 win in the second game on Saturday.

First-year southpaw Quinn Saunders recorded his fourth double-digit strikeout total of the season, striking out 12 NYU batters in six innings and allowing just one run on five hits and three walks. Saunders earned the win for the third-straight start and fifth time in his last six starts, improving to 5-0 with a 3.50 ERA and has struck out a team-high 69 batters in 36 innings this season.

Camphausen's second-inning solo home run gave Saunders an early 1-0 lead and CWRU added on two more in the third on a run-scoring ground out by Powers for his team-leading 49th RBI of the campaign and an RBI single by Harms to put the team ahead 3-0.

NYU scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third against Saunders. In both the fourth and fifth innings, the Violets put the tying runs on base with one out, but Saunders ended each frame with back-to-back strikeouts to preserve the lead, and he worked around a one-out walk in the sixth to depart the game with a two-run advantage.

Sophomore righty Austin McGowan pitched a scoreless seventh inning. In the eighth, NYU loaded the bases with one out against senior righty Patrick O'Connor, prompting Anderson to move to the mound from the designated hitter role to try to close out the victory. He went on to strike out back-to-back hitters to end the Violets' eighth-inning threat, and after a leadoff double in the ninth, he retired the next three batters he faced to leave the runner stranded and notch his team-leading sixth save of the season.

Camphausen finished the game two-for-four with a solo home run and a double, while Carinci added a two-for-two showing with a walk. In addition to recording the save, Anderson also went one-for-four with a run scored and a double in the late game on Saturday.

NYU starter Joe Cetale suffered the loss despite pitching seven strong innings, dropping to 1-3 for the season.

The Spartans and the Violets will conclude their four-game series tomorrow morning in Staten Island with a single game starting at 11:00 a.m.
