Cortland Sweeps Oswego; Mat Bruno Becomes Red Dragons' Career Hits Leader

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland baseball team remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play and extended its winning streak to 15 games with a doubleheader sweep of Oswego at Wallace Field. The Red Dragons (21-8-1, 11-0 SUNYAC) won the opener, 5-2, and the second game, 8-6, and have reached the 20-win mark for the 34th straight full season (1990-2019, 2021-24).

Graduate student outfielder Mat Bruno (Rye) became Cortland baseball's career hits leader after recording four hits in the twinbill. His 236 hits since coming to Cortland in 2019 eclipse the previous school record of 235 set by Andrew Mead from 2003-06. Bruno set the record with a game-tying single as part of a three-run rally in the top of the eighth in Game 2 after Cortland entered the inning down a run.

Cortland was the "visiting" team in each game since the games were originally scheduled to be played in Oswego but were moved to Cortland due to field conditions. Cortland and Oswego will complete the three-game weekend series Sunday at 1 p.m., also at Wallace Field.

Cortland 5, Oswego 2

Luis Misla (Tampa, FL/Riverview) earned the win with seven shutout innings. He struck out 13 batters, walked three and scattered seven hits. He allowed three runners over the first four innings but picked off two of them. Oswego had two singles in the fifth but eventually stranded runners on second and third after a diving catch by shortstop Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) on a soft liner. The Lakers also left runners on first and second in the sixth and the bases loaded in the seventh, with Misla each time striking out a batter to end the inning.

Cortland scored in the fourth inning on a Bruno double, a wild pitch and a Nolan Smith (Hamburg) RBI double. Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck) led off the fifth with a homer to make it 2-0. Marola singled, and with one out Bruno homered to push the lead to 4-0. The Red Dragons added a run in the seventh on a Bruno leadoff double, a groundout that moved Bruno to third, a two-out Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas) walk and Nick Chemotti's (Syracuse/West Genesee) RBI infield single. Bruno finished the game 3-for-4 with a homer, two doubles and three runs scored.

Oswego scored both of its runs in the eighth on solo homers from Jelani Hamer and CJ McCarthy. Hamer finished 3-for-4 with a walk and McCarthy and Danny Winchester each were 2-for-4.

Greg Mays (Troy/Tamarac) earned the save as Cortland's second reliever. He entered in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, a runner on and the potential tying run on deck and got Hamer to fly out to end the game.

Cortland 8, Oswego 6

Cortland led 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, but Oswego used a one-out error, a Owen Parliament walk and Jacob Levine's three-run homer to take a 6-5 lead. The Red Dragons responded in the top of the eighth. Jon Munoz (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) singled with one out and stole second. Bruno singled up the middle for his record-breaking hit to drive in Munoz with the tying run. Bruno moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout and Chemotti singled through the right side to give Cortland the lead. Kelly followed with a single down the right field line and Chemotti, who was running on the pitch, was able to score from first to make it 8-6.

The teams were tied 3-3 after three innings. Oswego's posted single runs in each of the first three innings on a wild pitch in the first, a Joe McLaughlin solo homer in the second and a Parliament solo homer in the third. Cortland's early runs came via a Kelly leadoff homer in the second and Chemotti's RBI single and Kelly's RBI double in the third.

Kringdon hit an RBI single down the right field line in the sixth to put Cortland up 4-3. Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) extended the lead to 5-3 with an RBI single in the seventh.

Kelly finished 3-for-4 with a homer, double and three RBI, Chemotti was 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs, and Munoz went 2-for-5 with a walk, three steals and two runs. Levine went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Greg Carullo finished 2-for-4 for the Lakers.

Cortland starter Devin Georgetti (Rochester/Gates Chili) took a no decision after allowing three runs in five and two thirds innings. He gave up eight hits and two walks and struck out eight batters. Cam Darrow (South Glens Falls) picked up the win after entering in the seventh despite allowing three runs, two earned, in that frame. He gave up one hit and one walk and fanned one. Matthew Nochowitz (Glen Head/North Shore) retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth for his second save of the season. He struck out two batters.

Jake Danyluk started for Oswego and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits over five innings. He fanned six batters and walked two. Richie Paul, the second Oswego reliever, gave up the three runs in the eighth and took the loss.
