Roanoke Baseball sweeps Virginia Wesleyan 9-7, 5-4

The Short story: The Roanoke College baseball team took both ends of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday against Virginia Wesleyan University, 9-7 and 5-4 in a doubleheader the Maroons' hosted in Calfee Park in Pulaski.

Isaac Brooks earned saves in each end of the twinbill.  

How it happened (Game 1):
*The Marlins took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning before the Roanoke offense came to life. Dylan Bonzon and Nate Prince each hit RBI singles to tie the score at 2-2.
*Prince drove home two with another single in the sixth but Va. Wesleyan countered with four in the eighth, three on a home run from Nick Sylvester.
*The Maroons plated five in the eighth. After a Corey Coogan single, an error and a sacrifice fly each scored single runs, Hayden Giordano put Roanoke ahead 8-7 with a double. Cayden Freels singled to bring home Giordano and end the scoring.  

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Five Maroons had two hits apiece: Coogan, Bonzon, Freels, Sam Scharville and Prince.
*Coogan, Bonzon and Freels each drew walks.
*Anthony Sullivan tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen.
*Thomas Crandall had three hits for VWU.
 
How it happened (Game 2):
*The Marlins opened with two runs in the first and RC cut the lead to 2-1 on a sacrifice fly by Jonny Wall.
*Kyle Moshier and Scharville hit RBI doubles as part of a three-run Roanoke third inning and Coogan singled in the sixth to make the score 5-2.
*Virginia Wesleyan scored two in the top of the ninth and had two on with two out but Brooks got out of the jam to complete the sweep.

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Jackson Murphy earned the win on the hill, working six innings with four strikeouts and allowing six hits and three walks.
*Coogan had two hits and two walks.
*Moshier, Giordano and Scharville each had two hits.
*Sylvester had three hits for the Marlins (19-15/10-9 ODAC).

Up Next:
*Roanoke (20-16/13-6 ODAC) travels to Guilford College Tuesday for an ODAC game at 3 p.m.
