#17 Spartans Top NYU 10-5 to Increase UAA Lead

The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team claimed a series win with a 10-5 victory over New York University in Staten Island, New York on Sunday morning, moving one win away from clinching the 2024 University Athletic Association Championship.

The Spartans, who improved to 27-8 overall including a 10-2 record in conference play, need to win just one out of four games against Washington University (Mo.) to clinch the program's fifth UAA Championship. NYU fell to 21-12 overall and ended its UAA season with an 8-8 league mark.

Junior left fielder Logan Andreyko opened the game with a double and scored two batters later on a double by graduate student third baseman James Powers. It was the 50th RBI of the season for Powers, marking the first time since 2014 and the sixth time overall a CWRU player has driven in 50 or more runs in a campaign. Later in the inning, Powers stole third and scored on a throwing error by the NYU catcher to extend the Spartans' lead to 2-0.

CWRU sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning and scored five runs to go ahead 7-0. Senior designated hitter Zack Carinci led the inning off with a solo home run, his second of the campaign. The Spartans then loaded the bases with nobody out still, and Andreyko drew a walk to bring across a run and make it 4-0. Senior catcher Jack Anderson followed with a single up the middle that scored a pair, and a sacrifice fly by graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen capped off the CWRU scoring in the frame.

NYU struck for a pair in the bottom of the second, but the Spartans responded in the top of the third with Anderson's second two-run single in as many innings, increasing the lead to 9-2. The Violets scored in the bottom of the third to make it 9-3, but CWRU got the run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by senior center fielder Connor Stephenson.

The score remained 10-3 until the eighth when NYU scored a pair of runs to cut the Spartans' lead to 10-5, but that would be as close as the Violets would get for the remainder of the contest.

CWRU first-year pitcher Tyler Stillson went the first four innings and allowed just three runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in a no-decision. Junior Kyle Gearding pitched the final five innings in relief, allowing just two runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts to pick up the victory and improve to 1-2 on the year.

Anderson finished the game two-for-five with four runs batted in. Powers, first-year shortstop Nate Arterburn, and Stephenson each added a pair of his in the game as well.

NYU's Andrew Reid suffered the loss to fall to 3-1 on the season.

CWRU will now turn its attention toward its final UAA series of the season at home against WashU next weekend. The Spartans and the Bears will kick off their four-game series on Friday, April 26 at 3:00 p.m.
