Hopkins Powers Past Swarthmore, 9-4

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins baseball team hosted Swarthmore in Centennial Conference action Friday afternoon, hitting four homers — the Blue Jays' second-most at home this season — en route to a 9-4 win to complete the regular season sweep of the Garnet.

Swarthmore scored the game's opening run in the second inning, but the lead was short-lived after Shawn Steuerer went yard in the bottom half of the frame to level things at one. The homer was the junior's team-best seventh of the season and third in as many games, marking the second time this season Steuerer has hit one over the fence in three straight contests.

After a pair of RBIs made it 3-1 Garnet (14-12, 4-3 Centennial) through the top of the third, Hopkins (20-6, 8-0 Centennial) used a three-run back half to take its first lead of the afternoon. Dylan Whitney got things started with a double to right, scoring on the next at bat after Alex Shane poked a single through the right side to cut the deficit to one. With one on and one out, Caleb Cyr stepped up and hit a high homer to right field to put two more across home plate and give the Blue Jays the lead for good.

Tyler Sugrim — who entered the game in the fourth — put together a gem on the mound in relief, allowing just one hit over the next three frames while a Whitney long ball made it a two-score game at 5-3. Swarthmore finally broke the scoreless drought in the seventh when a fielder's choice scored Matthew Silvestre to make it a one-run game once again, but it was Hopkins stringing together its best inning at the plate to pull away.

Matthew Cooper opened the seventh with a rocket to right center to make it 6-4 before Jacob Harris took one off the knee, putting a runner on with one out. The sophomore stole second after Jake Siani went down swinging, with Whitney's second double of the game bringing Harris home. Whitney then switched places with Cyr following the senior's rifle down the right field line to double up the Garnet, with a throwing error on the ensuing at bat bringing Cyr home and putting the Blue Jays up five.

Thomas Cancian entered Friday's game in the eighth and continued the trend of excellent pitching out of the bullpen, tossing two shutout innings without allowing a single hit to secure the 9-5 victory and series sweep.

Next up for Hopkins is a doubleheader against Dickinson Saturday, April 13 in a rematch of last year's Centennial Conference Championship. First pitch of the twin bill is set for 12 p.m.
