Souvignier's Career Day Lifts Hopkins to 8-6 Win Over Washington College

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins baseball team hosted Washington College in Centennial Conference action Friday afternoon, using a career day at the plate from Dillon Souvignier to secure the 8-6, come-from-behind win over the Shoremen.

After a scoreless two innings to start the game, a Souvignier long ball gave the Blue Jays (15-6, 3-0 Centennial) the early lead and kept the junior hot. Isaiah Winikur started the inning with a leadoff single to the shortstop, advancing to third after Alex Shane singled to right on the next at-bat. Winikur was caught stealing after a wild pitch for the second out of the inning, but a Caleb Cyr walk put two runners back on before Souvignier launched a ball to center field to put Hopkins up 3-0.

The lead was short-lived, however, with Washington College (5-19, 0-3 Centennial) scoring six unanswered in the next two innings to double up the Jays before Hopkins began its comeback — once again through the bat of Souvignier.

The junior brought in his fourth run of the day in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to two, tying the game one frame later on a two-RBI double down the right field line to secure his fifth and career-best sixth RBIs of the game. A sacrifice fly on the ensuing at-bat gave Hopkins its first lead since the third inning at 7-6 before an RBI single from Winikur scored Dylan Whitney — the junior hit his first triple of the season in the inning to put himself in scoring position — made it 8-6 through seven.

Bearden Awadzi — who got out of a bases loaded jam when he entered the game in the fifth inning — completed another impressive afternoon on the mound and secured the win allowing just one hit in the final two innings to keep the Blue Jays perfect in Centennial play.

Hopkins is back in action Saturday, April 6 to take on Ursinus. First pitch for the Centennial Conference matchup is set for 6 p.m.

Inside the Box Score – Johns Hopkins
• Souvignier's six RBIs are a career-high, with his three hits in a 3-4 effort also serving as a season-best mark. The junior has now registered multiple hits in four of his last five games and now sits second on the team in RBIs with 18.

• Awadzi moves to 3-0 with the win after giving up just two hits, walking two and fanning six in 4.1 shutout innings. The sophomore's six strikeouts were his most since his season debut against Juniata in early March, with his 3.09 ERA serving as the second-best among those who qualify as starting pitchers.

• Also securing multi-hit days were Winikur and Whitney, with both going 2-4. Winikur extends his hitting streak to 17 dating back to February 24, while Whitney now has three consecutive multi-hit outings having gone 7-10 in his last three appearances.

• All nine Blue Jays batters registered a hit on the day, with the team's .382 batting average serving as their second-best mark of the season — only Hopkins' .500 effort when it scored 21 runs against Mitchell is better.
