MUNHALL, Pa. – The Allegheny baseball team swept Chatham University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road twinbill on Saturday (April 13) at West Field in Munhall, Pa.
The opener was close, with a 5-3 finish, before the Gators (16-7, 8-2 PAC) dominated in the nightcap, taking down the Cougars (10-15, 2-7 PAC) 13-4.
Game 1 - Allegheny 5, Chatham 3
Pitching led the way for the Gators. Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) pitched a gem once again, throwing 8.0 full innings allowing no runs until the ninth frame while striking out six en route to his fourth win of the year.
The offense opened the scoring in the first inning. JD Robinson (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) laced a single to center which scored Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)).
Allegheny added to its lead in the third with another pair of runs. William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) doubled in a run before stealing home on a double steal with Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale), going when the ball went down to second base.
Finalizing the run totals in the seventh inning, Jonathan Sharp (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) smoked a double down the left field line to score Banez.
The Cougars offense was stumped by Allegheny's southpaw. He had 115 pitches going into the ninth innings, and after back-to-back base hits he was pulled.
John Doney (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) shut the door in the ninth. He gave up a walk with no hits and one unearned run on an error.
Game 2 - Allegheny 13, Chatham 4
The second contest was controlled by the Gators from the beginning. Allegheny scored five runs in the second frame to split the game open. Runs in the frame were driven in by Alejandro Samayoa (Katonah, New York/John Jay Cross River), Ben Shields (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi Area), Grant Dowden (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) and Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice), who had a pair.
Allegheny kept the bats hot in the next inning adding three runs in the third, and scored another in the fourth inning to make it a 9-0 contest.
Chatham found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. They scored all of their runs on as many hits, and went silent the rest of the evening.
Scoring two more in the sixth inning, the Gators regained momentum. They added another in the seventh inning and closed out the scoring in the ninth, with a pinch-hit RBI single from Andrew Stablewski (Buffalo, New York/St. Joseph's Collegiate Academy).
Mark Schweickert (Glen Allen, Va./John Randolph Tucker), threw in 7.0 innings of work. He walked five and gave up eight hits, but earned his third win of the year with the Gators taking home the sweep.
Inside the Game One Box Score
- Allegheny and Chatham both had six hits.
- The Cougars defense let up three errors which led to two unearned runs.
- Bryant-Dawson, Jennings, Robinson, Wolff, Sharp and Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) all registered hits.
- Herrmann threw 8.0 innings, allowing a pair of runs on six hits, giving up three walks and striking out six, moving to 4-1 on the year after the win.

- The Gators were led by Robinson, who had four knocks.

- Garrett Senchur (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) came into the eighth inning to relieve Schweikert. He threw 2.0 scoreless innings.

- Allegheny has won four games in a row, and has swept the last two conference opponents with the wins today.
- The Gators are now 8-2 in PAC action, sitting third in the standings.
- The offense scored in double figures for the eighth time this year. It is the second time they've registered 20 hits or more this season.
- Jennings extended his hit streak to 16 games, and has reached base every game of the season for Allegheny.
