Allegheny Baseball Caps Off Tuesday Sweep With Thrilling Walk-Off Victory

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College baseball team extended its win streak to seven consecutive games with a doubleheader sweep of Geneva College on a sun-filled Tuesday at Robert M. Garbark Field at the Robertson Athletic Complex.

Allegheny (19-7, 10-2 PAC) opened the twin bill with a 6-2 victory over the Golden Tornadoes (11-15, 3-9 PAC). The Gators then needed late-inning magic to help secure a thrilling 9-8 triumph in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

Allegheny 6, Geneva 2
The first half of Tuesday's doubleheader featured a little bit of everything: solid pitching, big hits, and a clean game by the Allegheny defense.

The Gators climbed out to an early lead with runs in the first, third, and fourth innings. In both the third and fourth innings, Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) and Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) led off with doubles and came around to score on sacrifice flies.

The Golden Tornadoes pushed across one run in the fifth to make it a 3-1 score, but their offense quickly sputtered with an inning-ending double play. It was the only run allowed by starter Walker Cunningham (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs). Cunningham worked in and out of trouble but lasted 6.1 innings for his second win in as many starts.

Insurance runs were scored in the seventh and eighth. Anthony Maslo (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Jonathan Sharp (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) slugged back-to-back doubles in the seventh to plate one run. Sharp then scored on an errant throw by the Geneva catcher after swiping third base. In the eighth, Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) doubled and came around to score Allegheny's sixth and final run.

Allegheny 9, Geneva 8
The nightcap was a back-and-forth contest. At times, both sides looked as though they might run away with the win. Ultimately, Allegheny loaded the bases and walked off in the bottom of the ninth.

Geneva scored three runs in the top of the first, but the Gators responded with a four-spot in the second and three runs in the fourth to jump ahead 7-3. The lead didn't last long, as the Golden Tornadoes scored five unanswered runs across the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. The biggest blow dealt by Geneva came from David Toruno, who kickstarted the comeback with a two-run home run in the fifth.

In the sixth, head coach Brandon Crum sent Ben Shields (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi Area), who started as the designated hitter, to the mound. The Gators played the remainder of the game without a DH, which forced the coaching staff to execute a series of substitutions that paid dividends in the late innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, Antonio Rios (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) provided a pinch-hit single that advanced Nolin to third. In the next at-bat, Andrew Stablewski (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Academy) came off the bench and hit a sac fly that evened the score at 8-all.

In the ninth, the Gators loaded the bases. William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) was hit by a pitch, Nolin reached via a bunt single, and Rios was intentionally walked to set up a force play at every base. Stablewski then provided the heroics. He made loud contact and drove the ball deep enough to right field to score the winning run with his second sac fly of the evening.
