No. 5 Salisbury Baseball powers down St. Mary’s (Md.), 15-5

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University baseball put up another prime offensive showing, bouncing the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks, 15-5 in eight innings, on Wednesday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls plated a pair in the first inning. After loading the bases on a pair of walks and a single, Ben Anderson brought the first tally home on a sac fly, then Trent Waire singled home one more to double the SU lead at 2-0.
  • In the second, Salisbury loaded the bases again on two base knocks and a walk, and Andrew Kell legged out a run-scoring infield hit to make it 3-0.
  • The teams traded a run each in the fourth. Ian Walters muscled an RBI triple to get the Seahawks on the board, while the Sea Gulls countered with a Tim Petrucelli RBI single to get it back to 4-1.
  • SU broke it open with a pair of three-spots in the sixth and seventh. In the sixth, Dom Frigiola doubled and Kell singled to set up Petrucelli for a three-run round-tripper to right center, making it 7-1.
  • In the seventh, Anderson belted a solo homer to lead off. After juicing the bases on two walks and a hit batsman, Adam Tommer scored on a passed ball, and Kell brought home one more on an RBI groundout that pushed it to 10-1.
  • SMC got four runs back in the top of the eighth on a passed ball, AJ Pyfferon RBI single, and two-run double by Trevor Smith to make it 10-5.
  • Salisbury responded in kind by scoring five runs without recording an out in the home eighth. With the bases loaded after a single, HBP, and walk, Waire singled home a pair. Tommer was then plunked and Alex Craig cracked a pinch-hit two-run double to right. Two straight hit batsmen, the latter of which gained Joey Bowers an RBI, made it 15-5 and triggered a 10-run mercy rule to end the game.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Tim Petrucelli left the yard for the fourth straight game, finishing 2-for-4 with his 10th home run of the year, two runs scored, and four RBIs.
  • Petrucelli has now achieved just the 13th double-digit home run campaign Sea Gull history, moving into a tie with three others for 10th on the single-season leaderboard. He sits four shy of the single-season SU record of 14, shared by 2023 teammates Jacob Ference and Danny Sheeler.
  • Ben Anderson finished 2-for-2 with his first big fly of the season, plus two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Trent Waire went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs, and Andrew Kell went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.
  • Adam Tommer batted 2-for-3 and scored four runs.
  • Benji Thalheimer (2-2) authored one of the best starts of his career en route to his 14th SU victory. Thalheimer gave up one run on four hits over a career-long seven innings, walking one and striking out three on 102 pitches.
