Slevin Sets Saves Record for #18 RMC Baseball in Dramatic Win over #5 Salisbury

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) belted a game-tying three-run homer in the third, senior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) ripped a bases-clearing double in the fifth to put the Yellow Jackets ahead for good, and junior Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) recorded his program-record ninth save as the 18th-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team outlasted No. 5 Salisbury 9-8 on Thursday afternoon.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 9, Salisbury 8

Venue: Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park

Records: RMC 25-9, SU 27-7

How It Happened:

  • The Sea Gulls scored three in the first and one in the third before the Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a one-out single and came home on a double by freshman Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga). Senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) drew a two-out walk before Harvey deposited an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field, his team-leading eighth homer of the season, to level the score at 4-4.
  • RMC took its first lead in the fourth. Myers had a leadoff single, was sacrificed to second by sophomore Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian), went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) to give the home team a 5-4 edge.
  • SU put up three in the top of the fifth before the Yellow Jackets put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame. Webb had a two-out single, Harvey followed with a base hit and freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Myers ripped a double down the right field line to clear the bases and give RMC an 8-7 advantage.
  • RMC added an insurance run in the eighth. Myers was hit by a pitch to start the inning, went to second on a sacrifice by Duff, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error to give the Yellow Jackets a 9-7 lead.
  • Salisbury would not go quietly in the ninth against Slevin. Two infield choppers went for hits before a potential sacrifice went for a bunt single to load the bases with none out. Slevin recorded a strikeout looking for the first out. A sacrifice fly to center pulled the Sea Gulls within one but was the second out. Slevin recorded a swinging strikeout to end the game.
