Five Hits for Wernoski for #18 RMC Baseball vs. RC

ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) had five hits, one walk and three runs as the first place and No. 18 Randolph-Macon baseball team dropped an ODAC doubleheader to second-place Roanoke on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.

How It Happened: Game 1

  • The Maroons tallied a run in the top of the third before the Yellow Jackets put up a crooked number in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) struck out but reached on a wild pitch to start the inning. Senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a one-out single to move Quici to second. Quici and Webb pulled off a double steal and Quici scored on a base hit by junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) to tie the game at 1-1. With two away, senior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) drove a homer to right, his second of the season, to give RMC a 4-1 lead.
  • RC tied it with three in the fourth, took the lead with three in the sixth, and added single runs in the sixth and seventh before RMC got back on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Wernoski drew a leadoff walk and went to second on an infield single by Myers. Both runners moved up on an errant pickoff throw to second. Senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) reached on an error to knock in Wernoski to make it 9-5. Senior Richie Dudley (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) tripled to drive in Myers and Bush as the Yellow Jackets pulled within two at 9-7.
  • RMC stranded two in the eighth and two in the ninth to fall two runs short.

  • The Yellow Jackets left 14 runners on base.

How It Happened: Game 2

  • The Maroons put up seven in the top of the first before Harvey went deep in the second, his ninth home run of the season.
  • RC added four in the third and two in the fifth before RMC responded in the bottom of the fifth. Bush had a one-out single and went to second on a walk to junior Eli Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen). Sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) had a base hit to bring home Bush. Webb smacked a three-run homer, his third of the spring, to make it 13-5.
  • The Yellow Jackets put up a pair in the sixth. Wernoski had a leadoff single and went to third on a double by sophomore Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby). Bush delivered a two-run single to center as the score moved to 13-7.
  • Wernoski had a two-out single and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to make it 13-8. RC added one in the eighth to make the final 14-8.

  • Wernoski went 3 for 5 with two runs. He has reached base in 33 straight games. Wernoski is second on the team with 16 multi-hit games.
  • Webb was 2 for 4 with a homer, a walk and three RBI. He leads the team with 18 multi-hit games.
