Hampden-Sydney Splits Doubleheader Against Bridgewater; Wins Nightcap 10-4, Drops Opener 5-3

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) had three hits and four RBIs, sophomore Jack Wilson (Petersburg) had three hits and three RBIs, and senior Tillman Butler (Culpeper) had two hits and three RBIs, as Hampden-Sydney College split a season-ending Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader at home against Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Senior Ryan Portes (Midlothian) gained the pitching victory in the 10-4 win in the nightcap for the host Tigers (16-19, 9-13), while sophomore Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) took the mound setback in the 5-3 loss in the opener against the visiting Eagles (25-14, 13-9).

In game one, H-SC scored three runs on nine hits with one error … scoring the three runs in the sixth inning. BC scored five runs on 10 hits with no errors … scoring four runs in the fifth inning and one run in the ninth.

In the sixth, freshman Jake Moore (Dry Fork) (2-4) singled to left field to begin the at-bat, advanced to second base when Lancaster (1-2) was hit by a pitch and moved to third when sophomore Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (2-4) reached on a fielder's choice. Moore scored on a clutch RBI single to left center field by junior Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-4, RBI) with two outs, and Farr and Masterson crossed the plate when Butler (1-3, 2 RBIs) followed with a clutch two-run triple to the wall in right center field to close the margin to 4-3.

Moore and Farr each had two hits for the Garnet & Grey, including an opposite field double off the wall in left field by Farr in the second inning.

Miller-Bopp (3-2) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) tossed the final 3.0 innings, yielding three hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and three walks.

In game two, H-SC scored 10 runs on 13 hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the first inning, two runs in the third, four runs in the fourth and two runs again in the fifth. BC scored four runs on eight hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning, one run in the eighth and two runs in the ninth.

In the first, Masterson (2-2) led-off with a single to right center field and advanced to third base on a one-out double down the left field line by senior Julian Franks-Pollock (Virginia Beach) (2-5), scoring on sacrifice fly RBI to center field by Lancaster (2-3, 4 RBIs). Franks-Pollock crossed the plate when Butler (1-1, RBI) followed with an RBI single to right field for an early 2-0 advantage.

In the third, Masterson walked to begin the at-bat and advanced to third base on a one-out single through the left side by Franks-Pollock, scoring on an RBI single to right field by Lancaster. Franks-Pollock crossed the plate when freshman Trey Shrock (Appomattox) (1-4, RBI) followed with an RBI single to left field to make it 4-1.

In the fourth, freshman Brandon Shelhorse (Fairfax) (2-4) singled through the right side with one out, advancing to second and third base, respectively, when sophomore Turner Fitzpatrick (Richmond) (1-3) was hit by a pitch and Masterson walked to load the bases. Shelhorse scored when Wilson (2-4, 3 RBIs) was hit by a pitch and Fitzpatrick scored on a wild pitch, while both Masterson and Wilson crossed the plate via clutch two-run double down the right field line with two outs by Lancaster for an 8-1 lead.

In the fifth, senior Cameron Shields (Scottsville) reached on a throwing error with one out and advanced to second base on a single up the middle by Shelhorse. Masterson drew another walk with two outs to load the bases, and both Shields and Shelhorse scored when Wilson followed with a two-run single down the right field line to make it 10-1.

Franks-Pollock, Lancaster, Masterson, Shelhorse and Wilson each had two hits for the home team.

Sophomore Jake Williams (Chesapeake) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 3.2 innings, scattering two hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and four walks. Portes (1-0) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in relief for the win, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks. Freshman Alex Caruso (Appomattox) followed with 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and one run, earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Senior Jack Bourdon (Madison) tossed the final inning, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.

It was Senior Day as Jack Bourdon, Lucas Burnette (Hurt), Julian Franks-Pollock, Trent Jones (Virginia Beach), Ryan Portes, Cameron Shields and Tillman Butler were recognized during a special ceremony between games of the doubleheader. These young men led the program to 74 overall wins during their four years, including 44 wins in ODAC action, with two 20-win seasons and three ODAC Tournament appearances.
