#7 Seahawks blank Lions twice to take sole possession of first place in NEWMAC

LYNN, Mass. (Saturday, April 27, 2024) - The #7 Salve Regina University baseball team coasted to a pair of shutout victories against Emerson College, 20-0 (in seven innings) and 7-0, in a NEWMAC doubleheader at Fraser Field on Saturday afternoon.

Game one starter Sean Mulligan (Verona, N.J.) did not allow a hit in five innings of work while striking out seven Lions. Fellow Garden State Seahawks Nick Callano (Ocean, N.J.) and Ben Weber (Rockaway, N.J.) each pitched an inning to preserve the shutout.

For a program-record fourth time this season, and second time in a week, Salve Regina (29-5, 12-2 NEWMAC) scored 20 or more runs in a game. A 10-run second inning featured a three-run homer from Evan O'Rourke (Arlington, Mass.), his fifth of the season tying him with Brandon Grover (Ashland, Mass.) for the team lead. Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) connected for his first round tripper of the year, a three-run shot in the third.

In game two, sophomore Joe DeRienzo (Trumbull, Conn.) improved to 5-0 on the season with seven shutout innings. He struck out five Lions while extending his scoreless inning streak to 12 frames. Allowing just three basehits, DeRienzo also lowers his WHIP while not allowing a free pass in his last two starts and none since the top of the first against Babson on April 14. Jason Arrigo (Basking Ridge, N.J.) closed out the second consecutive shutout, and third in seven days for the Seahawks, with two solid innings.

Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) doubled in Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J) for a first-inning run. D'Amato had gone 4-for-5 in the opener and finished the week 12-for-22 (.545) with an on-base percentage north of 70 percent (.727). He scored 12 runs in five games and drove in nine which included his three-run walk-off home run on Tuesday against Johnson & Wales. He's now tied with Ryan Kelly '16 for fifth on the Seahawks' all-time hit list (208).

Cannoe added a sac fly in the third and DeRienzo got two strikeouts and a fly out in his last inning of work with a 2-0 lead. The Seahawks added two in the eighth on RBI singles from Wil McCarthy (Pembroke, Mass.) and Brady Smolinski (North Grafton, Mass.). Tyler Petrosino (Beverly, Mass.) singled in a run in the ninth and later scored on Michael Breen's (Auburn, Mass.) two-out, two-run bases-loaded single.

With one shutout per year from 2018 through 2021, the Seahawks have picked up the pace in 2022 (six), 2023 (six), and 2024 (currently with six).

Salve Regina hosts Roger Williams University in non-league action on Tuesday at Reynolds Field (3 p.m.).
