STAUNTON, Va. – The Stevenson University baseball team darted out to a 10-run lead over Mary Baldwin, only to have to hold on as the Fighting Squirrels (1-1) scored eight runs, but, the Mustangs (1-0) won by a score of 13-11 on Wednesday night.
The Mustangs cracked out 13 hits on the night in winning their season opener for the second time in the last three seasons. Also, it was the first win for new head coach Matt Righter at the helm of the Mustangs.
Kaige Garrity went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Nick Tamberino also collected three hits and scored two runs with three runs batted.
Brady Bedway, Jaylon Surell each had two hits on the night.
Bedway, Garrity, Surell and Christopher Manco also stole bases, while Garrity and Dalton Reinhart hit home runs for Stevenson.
Jake Treasure got the win throwing 105 pitches. He went four innings allowing just one earned run and struck out two. John Delgado slammed the door shut in earning his first save of the season, striking out four and allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
Stevenson struck early, as Tamberino tripled scoring Bedway for the first run of the game, with Tamberino eventually scoring on a single by Manco.
In the second, Bedway grounded out to score Cory Hatcher, with Garrity later driving home Matt Perri.
Tamberino had a two RBI single in the fifth, while Manco had a bases loaded RBI scoring Garrity. Garrity and Reinhart hit home runs in the seventh, with Reinhart being a two-run home run to score Tamberino.
Stevenson opens play at home on Saturday against Lesley. With the Friday weather, the series make up has changed. The two teams will play a single game on Saturday at 2, with the doubleheader scheduled for Sunday.
