Marietta falls one game short of OAC Tournament title

BEREA, Ohio — Marietta College saw its season to come to an end Saturday (May 11) afternoon in the Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Championship game as No. 3 ranked Baldwin Wallace University came from behind to beat the Pioneers by the score of 6-5. Marietta forced the deciding game seven with a 9-5 win over the Yellow Jackets earlier in the day.
 
Marietta finishes the season with a 24-19 overall record. Today's one-run loss marked the twelfth time this season the Pioneers were defeated by a single run. Baldwin Wallace improves to 36-8 and will receive the OAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
 
The Etta Express had four players selected to the All-Tournament Team including first baseman Austin Amburgey, outfielder Jeremy Tonelli, pitcher/outfielder Trent Valentine, and pitcher Forrest Havanis.
 
Marietta scored a run in the first, third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Nick Bonnizzio led off the game with a single and moved to second on a ground out. He came around to score on a single from Amburgey. Bonnizzio scored in the third when he was hit by a pitch to start the frame. A pair of ground outs moved him to third where he scored on a wild pitch.
 
Valentine got things going in the fourth with a leadoff single. He moved to third when a BW pickoff throw to first base was wild. Cole Rieman drove Valentine in with a double down the left field line.
 
Pioneer starting pitcher Zach Marzetz cruised through the first four innings but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. A walk and two doubles cut the Marietta lead to one, 3-2, and chased Marzetz from the game. Gabe Torres took over and beaned the first batter he faced. Nick Clark followed with a three-run home run to right giving the Yellow Jackets a 5-3 lead.
 
BW added a run in the sixth when Mally Kilbane was beaned with the bases loaded.
 
The Pioneers tried to rally scoring two runs in the eighth inning to get within a run, 6-5. Tonelli led off with a walk and moved to second on a ground out. Cael Magill lined a single to center scoring Tonelli. After moving to second on a wild pitch, Magill came around to score on a Valentine double. BW retired the next two batters to get out of the inning.
 
Marietta got a pair of runners on base in the ninth with two outs. Alex Richter and Tonelli both singled. BW went to the bullpen and brought in Carson Collins who induced a ground ball to end the game.
 
Matt Moscarino (2-0) started on the mound for BW and got the win after throwing 5.1 innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out two. Matt Sabin worked 3.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Collins recorded his third save of the season after retiring the lone batter he faced in the ninth.
 
Marzetz threw 4.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits with a pair of walks. Torres (5-2) took the loss after giving up two runs on one hit without recording an out. Cooper Fiehrer gave up one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
 
Amburgey and Valentine each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
 
Both teams plated three runs in the first inning of game one. The Pioneers got a two-run single from Ben Kaplin, while Max Anastasio delivered a two-run double for the Yellow Jackets.
 
Marietta grabbed the lead for good with two runs in the fourth on a single from Cole Rieman that scored Tonelli and Amburgey. The Pioneers added four more runs in the eighth for a 9-3 lead. Marietta loaded the bases and then got a walk from Amburgey, a wild pitch and a passed ball to score the first three runs. The final run scored on an error.
 
Mark Mohnickey launched a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the ninth for the Yellow Jackets.
 
Havanis (5-3) got the win in relief of starter Sam Johnson. Havanis tossed 6.0 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits with five strikeouts. Johnson worked 3.0 innings and gave up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
 
Aidan Bennett (4-1) started and took the loss for Baldwin Wallace. He was charged with five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Bennett walked five and struck out four. Garrett Miller allowed four runs on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 4.1 innings, while Mason Decker retired the Pioneers in order in the ninth.
 
Bonnizzio, Amburgey, and Rieman had two hits each for the Pioneers. Rieman and Kaplin each drove in two runs, while Tonelli and Amburgey scored three runs apiece.
