Harvey, Hurlers Help #22 RMC Baseball Reach Regional Title Game

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) put the Yellow Jackets ahead with his 12th homer of the season and four hurlers held the Lions in check as the 22nd-ranked and second-seeded Randolph-Macon baseball team defeated 14th-ranked and top-seeded Penn State Harrisburg 7-3 on Saturday afternoon to advance to the championship game of the Harrisburg Regional.

How It Happened:

  • After the Lions tallied a run in the bottom of the third, the Yellow Jackets answered in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) reached on an error and went to second on a single to center by freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill). Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby), his first sacrifice hit of the season. Harvey reached on an error that drove in Schmitt to level the score at 1-1.
  • RMC broke the deadlock in the sixth. Wernoski had a leadoff single to center and went to second on a wild pitch. Following a pitching change with one away. Harvey went the other way with a homer to right center, his 12th long ball of the season, as the Yellow Jackets took a 3-1 lead.
  • Penn State Harrisburg put a runner on with one away in the sixth, but sophomore Connor McAuley (Haymarket, Va./Highland) rolled a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
  • The Yellow Jackets added to their run total in the seventh. Sophomore Eli Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) struck out swinging with one away but reached on a wild pitch. Freshman Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) was hit by a pitch and Schmitt reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Wernoski had an infield single to knock in Brooks to make it 4-1. Webb reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Quici, giving RMC a 5-1 advantage.
  • The Lions loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. McAuley fanned a pinch-hitter to strand the trio.
  • Penn State Harrisburg plated two in the bottom of the eighth, but junior Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) coaxed a groundout to second to strand the tying runs in scoring position as the Yellow Jackets took a 5-3 lead to the ninth.
  • RMC kept the offense going in the top of the ninth. Schmitt drew a one-out walk and went to second on a passed ball. Wernoski also walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Webb singled to left to bring in Schmitt, and Wernoski scored on a balk to push the lead to 7-3.
  • Junior Michael Shanahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) tossed a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to secure the victory.

  • The Yellow Jackets have started 2-0 in a regional for the third time in program history. RMC won its first three games in the Washington, Pa. Regional in 2016 and its first four games in the Holly Springs, N.C. Regional in 2018. The Yellow Jackets won their only regional title in 2018 to advance to the Division III College World Series in Appleton, Wis.
  • RMC recorded its 30th win, reaching that number for the fourth time in program history and all have come since 2016. The Yellow Jackets had 32 wins a season ago. The Yellow Jackets have recorded 30 victories in consecutive seasons for the first time in program history.
  • RMC is the only Division III program to win NCAA playoff games in football, men's basketball and baseball this academic year.
  • Senior Drew Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) pitched the first three innings for RMC with one hit, one run and four strikeouts.
  • McAuley worked four shutout innings with three hits and three punchouts to earn the victory and improve to 2-0.
  • Slevin made his 23rd appearance of the season, setting a program record.
  • Wernoski went 3 for 4 with a walk, two runs and one RBI. It was his third three-hit game of the season. Wernoski is second on the team with 19 multi-hit games.
  • Webb had two hits, including a double, and two RBI. He leads the team with 21 multi-hit games. Webb has reached base in 12 straight games. He has 16 doubles this season, the fifth-highest total in program history. Webb has 40 career doubles, also fifth in program history.
  • Schmitt walked and scored twice. He has reached base in 25 straight games.
  • Harvey went 1 for 4 with a homer and three RBI. He is tied for the team lead with 11 multiple-RBI games. He is tied for third in program history with 12 home runs. Travis Lodge had 13 in 2016 and Hunter Cole matched that number a season ago. Harvey has gone deep seven times in the past 13 games.
