Top-Seeded Hopkins Cruises to Sixth Regional Championship Title

BALTIMORE, MD – The top-seeded Johns Hopkins baseball team stayed red hot in its Baltimore Regional Championship Game against Arcadia Sunday afternoon, blowing out the Knights for the second time in as many days with a 19-4 win to clinch the program's sixth Regional Title in program history. The victory advances the Blue Jays to their second consecutive and third ever Super Regional, with the loss concluding Arcadia's season with a record of 33-14.

Just over 12 hours after scoring 20 on the Knights in Saturday's first game, Hopkins (35-9) wasted no time running up the score once again in Sunday's rematch, plating five in the first inning to take control. Dylan Whitney led off with a double to right field before Steuerer took one off the arm to put two on with one out. Souvignier punched a single through the left side to score Whitney and open Sunday's scoring, with Caleb Cyr turning on one on the very next at bat that would clear the fence for a three-run homer and make it 4-0.

Jacob Harris restarted the rally with a single through the right side, stealing second to set up Isaiah Winikur to hit an RBI single to right for the fifth and final run of the frame.

While Matt Savedoff tossed a gem on the mound — the junior held the Knights without a hit through five innings — the Blue Jays continued to pile on runs, scoring two in the third on RBIs from Cyr and Matthew Cooper before exploding for another five runs in the fourth.

Whitney, Alex Shane and Shawn Steuerer drew three straight walks to start the inning, with Souvignier's jersey taking the full force of a fastball to earn a free 90 and bring in the first run. Cyr hit another sac fly to left field to bring in Hopkins' ninth run of the game — and bring the senior's RBI total to five — before Jacob Harris launched his first collegiate home run to right center to score three more and balloon the lead to 12-0.

A wild pitch in the fifth would score Jimmy Stevens and give the Jays a 13-0 advantage, but a solo shot and RBI single in the top of the sixth by Arcadia's Kevin Wheeler and Justin Massielo broke the shutout and made it 13-2 where the score would remain through the top of the seventh.

In the bottom half of the frame it was Isaiah Winikur's turn to hit his third home run in two games with a leadoff homer to right field before another sac fly — this time off the bat of Shane — scored Cooper to extend the lead back to 13 at 15-2.

The Blue Jays turned to their bench once again in the eighth inning but the production continued, with Lukas Geer cranking his second homer of the season to right in the eighth before Jake Siani crushed his first collegiate home run two at bats later to give Hopkins its largest lead of the day.

The Knights got back a pair of runs on Bearden Awadzi in the ninth, but the deficit was far too much to overcome, with a final groundout to short clinching the 19-4 win and sixth Regional Championship in program history.

The Blue Jays will be back in action Friday, May 24 to compete in the program's third NCAA Super Regional, with the location and opponent to be decided this evening.
