How It Happened:

  • The Bulldogs scored two in the first and one in the second before the Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a leadoff single and junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) was hit by a pitch. Junior Aidan Pinto (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) sacrificed both runners up 90 feet. Senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had a single to center to knock in Webb. Sophomore Eli Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) laid down a safety squeeze that brought home Harvey to make it 3-2.
  • Adrian added single runs in the fifth and sixth before RMC put up another crooked number in the bottom of the sixth. Harvey had a leadoff single and Pinto followed with a homer to left, his first of the season, as the Yellow Jackets pulled within one at 5-4.
  • The Yellow Jackets tied it in the seventh. Freshman Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a single by freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and came home on a base hit by Webb to level the score at 5-5.
  • The Bulldogs put the potential go-ahead run on second base with one away in the top of the eighth. A grounder was hit to Bush at shortstop. He tagged the runner at second and completed the throw to first for the inning-ending double play.
  • Brooks drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth and senior Richie Dudley (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) had a 2-2 count when lightning was detected in the area, starting a delay of 3:10. When play resumed, the Yellow Jackets failed to score, sending the game to the ninth tied at 5-5.
  • Junior Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) took the mound in the top of the ninth. Back-to-back singles with one away again put the potential go-ahead run on second. Slevin turned a come backer into a 1-6-3 double play to end the threat.
  • Wernoski worked a leadoff walk and sent to second when Webb reached on a bunt single. Harvey bunted to the mound and the pitcher made a bad throw to third, loading the bases. Myers, who was a defensive replacement for Pinto in left an inning earlier, ripped a long hit over the left fielder's head to plate Wernoski with the game-winner.
